Global sports media company DAZN has launched a subscription-based women’s football streaming service in Spain.
For €9.99 per month, DAZN Victoria subscribers will get access to live coverage of all Spanish top flight and UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) matches, FA Women’s Super League (WSL) main matches and the Women’s FA Cup.
The launch reflects the growing popularity and commercial potential of women’s football, the company says, acknowledging the fact that many want to show their support for women’s sports in particular.
The company reports that last year’s UWCL final between Barcelona and Olympique Lyon attracted a large number of viewers live on its own DAZN platform, YouTube channel and partner free-to-air TV channels (FTA). Most of the views are in Spain and have 1.6 million viewers.
Bosco Aranguren, General Manager of DAZN in Spain, said: «With this new plan we are evolving our offering and reinforcing our commitment to support women’s sports. DAZN Victoria is a specific subscription plan for women’s soccer that will drive the growth of this sport, creating new references and promoting a positive and lasting change in society.»
For decades, women’s competition has been on the back burner. The rights were either tied to men’s competitions or given away for free, with matches aired on obscure channels.
The new DAZN service is a testament to this changing landscape. Ata Football in the United States has been running specials for women’s football for several years, but the launch of special subscriptions by major broadcasters has been a landmark moment. Football fans now have the opportunity to show that they consider the women’s match to be the main event.
