The Azerbaijani freestyle wrestling team dominates the U20 European Championship, which is being held in Spain.
Ruslan Abdullayev (57 kg) and Jeyhun Allahverdiev (61 kg) became European champions. Yusif Dursunov (125 kg) took silver, and Javidan Akhmedov (70 kg), Sadyk Mustafazadeh (79 kg) and Zafar Aliyev (97 kg) — bronze medals. The Azerbaijani national team leads the standings at the European Championship under 20.
Wrestling continues to be the most popular sport in Azerbaijan, under the control of the National Wrestling Federation established in 1993.
The Games in Rio opened a new chapter in the history of wrestling for Azerbaijan. The country became one of the two leading countries that were able to increase the number of medals won at five Olympic Games in a row.
In 2020, Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers reached the third place in the overall medal count of the individual world championship in Serbia.
Azerbaijani wrestlers have won two medals in international competitions, including silver and bronze.
In 2022, Azerbaijani wrestler Osman Nurmagomedov (weight category 92 kg) became the world champion in Belgrade.
Nurmagomedov defeated the Russian wrestler in the final, becoming the world champion.
