SBC CIS Weekly Digest: December 11 — 18, 2023

SBC CIS Editorial Team is happy to present a quick recap of the gambling industry events, news, regulations and partnerships that happened last week. 

The Ukrainian Gambling Regulatory Commission (KRAIL) reported a period of high activity in licence applications. In November 686 new participants expressed a desire to enter the gambling market.

The Chilean Senate will debate the content and form of the proposed Federal Gambling Law (035/2022), which aims to revise outdated laws regarding gambling in the Andean country. Despite unresolved differences, Chile’s Chamber of Deputies this week passed the bill with a majority of 97 votes in favor and 28 against.

The Senate of Brazil has approved the ‘basic text’ of Bill 3626/2023, providing the foundations for the launch of a federal sports betting market. Yet, following further amendments, the Senate has ordered that the Bill be returned to the Chamber of Deputies for further analysis. The decision follows three critical considerations debated by the Senate yesterday afternoon ahead of its symbolic vote. The Senate considered ‘amendments and limitations’, in which it upheld an appeal by Liberal Party Senator Carlos Portinho (RJ) to exclude online casino modalities from the Bill’s text.

The Parliament of Kazakhstan was discussing a bill aimed at limiting the activities of gaming establishments and regulating their advertising, while the Office of National Statistics reported that the volume of gambling services in the amount of 285 billion tenge was recorded in nine months of 2023. The Minister of Sports and Tourism, Ermek Marzhikpayev, confirmed that the Parliament is discussing changes that will restrict gambling for certain groups of people affecting everyone included in the register of debtors, alimony defaulters or those with loan debts. Additionally, an increase in the age threshold to 25 years and a complete ban on advertising of bookmakers and sweepstakes on all platforms are being considered.

Uzbekistan is getting ready to ban bank transfers to foreign gambling companies. If suspicious transactions are detected, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan will temporarily block customer cards for a period of up to three days.

IMG has gained exclusive rights to distribute international media products for Confederation of African Football (CAF) events in over 85 countries. The deal runs from 2023 to 2025, allowing the global sports, events and representation company to manage the broadcast of the two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments and the respective qualifying matches.
