GREF 2024 in Malta: MGA Focuses on Strengthening Industry Partnerships

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) hosted the Gambling Regulators European Forum (GREF) 2024 conference in Malta from 20 to 22 May.

The event brought together gaming regulators from more than 25 countries, creating a platform for discussing industry issues and exchanging views.

This year, for the first time, regulators from other continents attended the conference, allowing the issues to be addressed from a global perspective.

Key topics included the MGA’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Code, responsible gambling, digital innovation, international gambling regulation, anti-money laundering (AML) and different approaches to gambling in different regions.

Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, GREF Chairperson,  commented:  “European regulators cannot be isolated, apart from the other actors. Even if we have specific and unique responsibilities, we need to work with others to propose effective regulation.”

Charles Mizzi, MGA CEO,  added: “The complexity of the industry demands collaborative efforts. With various stakeholders, including operators, technology providers and government bodies – all playing critical roles – collaboration allows us to leverage the diverse expertise and perspectives to develop comprehensive and effective regulatory frameworks.”

The conference brought together more than 90 regulators from around the world, creating a platform for networking and collaboration, highlighting the importance of a unified approach to gambling regulation.

This development follows several important steps by the MGA. The authorities recently revoked Tipbet’s operating permit in accordance with the rules stipulated in the Gambling Compliance and Enforcement Rules.

This required Tipbet to suspend all gaming operations, return player balances and pay outstanding commissions. This decision is part of MGA’s ongoing efforts to ensure regulatory compliance in the gaming industry.

Earlier this year, the MGA also revoked the permit granted to Super7plus and suspended Rush Gaming’s permit.
