FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a stern warning to players regarding involvement in sports betting, promising “tough sanctions” as football approaches a busy summer. Addressing the issue of match-fixing, Infantino emphasized that players must refrain from gambling on any sport, including football and rugby.
“Players know this: gambling, obviously. When something happens, there are investigations, and very serious and uncompromising decisions when it comes to betting and football at all levels, including amateur football,” Infantino stated.
He underscored the importance of maintaining the integrity of sport and the necessity of punishing athletes involved in match betting. Infantino reiterated FIFA’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the game and assured strict actions against those who compromise it.
This warning follows recent incidents involving players such as Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United and Nicolo Fagioli from Juventus, who have faced sanctions for betting on sports. Lucas Paqueta of West Ham is currently under investigation by the English Football Association (FA) for allegedly receiving yellow cards to benefit a third-party bet.
Infantino noted that punishment alone is insufficient. He emphasized the need for prevention and education to cultivate a culture of integrity, where athletes understand and respect the rules designed to ensure fairness and enjoyment in sport.
