The Danish Consumer Ombudsman, the Gambling Advertising Council, and the Danish Gambling Authority have established a new agreement to enhance coordination in combating illegal gambling marketing in Denmark.
This collaboration aims to streamline efforts and avoid duplication when addressing violations by gambling companies.
The agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of each authority. The Consumer Ombudsman will oversee gambling companies’ compliance with the Marketing Act and other consumer protection regulations. The Danish Gambling Authority will monitor compliance with the gambling marketing rules set out in the Gambling Act, including sales promotion provisions.
The Gambling Advertising Council, an industry body, will handle complaints about activities that violate the industry’s code of conduct. This code is designed to strengthen social responsibility, protect vulnerable groups, and reduce gambling addiction.
Under the new agreement, the Gambling Advertising Council will refer cases to the Consumer Authority or the Gambling Authority if gambling companies fail to address the authority’s observations or if there are violations of the authorities’ rules.
The Consumer Authority and the Gambling Authority will also direct complainants to the Gambling Advertising Council if the issue concerns the industry’s code of conduct but does not violate the rules enforced by the authorities.
The three authorities will regularly inform each other of relevant cases and hold annual meetings to ensure ongoing coordination. This cooperation is expected to improve the regulatory framework and enforcement measures against illegal marketing.
In connection with this, the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, plans to hold a third round of anti-money laundering (AML) training on 31 October. Organized jointly with several Danish authorities, this training aims to improve operational knowledge and facilitate the exchange of experiences between organizations subject to AML laws. Previous sessions in November 2023 and April 2024 attracted large audiences, prompting the decision to hold a side event.
Additionally, Spillemyndigheden will introduce new licensing rights for game providers starting in 2025. This follows a recent report indicating a 6.9% decline in Danish monthly gaming revenue (GGR), amounting to DKK 595 million (USD 86.4 million) in April.
