From the start of the new season, the MPL will introduce a revamped tournament format featuring 12 clubs that will compete in the first and last round, leading to additional playoffs depending on the final positions.
The MPL is the top tier of professional football in Malta, and its history dates back to 1909, when the league was called the First Division.
The current champions are Hamrun Spartans, who have won the title for the 10th time, while prestigious clubs such as Sliema Wanderer and Floriana have won the cup 26 times each.
The MPL is organized by the Malta Football Association (MFA), which recently announced a partnership with European betting and gaming company Meridian Bet. Meridian Bet has become the title sponsor of the Malta FA Cup.
Bjorn Vassallo, President of the MFA, noted: “Our partnership with Meridianbet, a company with a deep-rooted presence in Malta, for the sponsorship of the FA Trophy, is an ideal fit, as the Association, through its domestic competitions, continues to attract a sporting culture whilst creating community engagement through football.”
