10 Play Receives Warning from ACMA Over Gambling Advertisements

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued a warning to streaming service 10 Play for violating gambling advertising regulations.

The violation involved airing gambling ads outside the permitted times during two live sports broadcasts.

The ACMA launched an investigation into the Network Ten Pty-owned service after receiving viewer complaints about two live streams on October 14, 2023. The streams featured the A-League Women’s match between Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets, and Australia’s friendly against England.

Under local advertising regulations, online content providers are prohibited from showing gambling ads during live sporting events between 5 am and 8:30 pm, including the five minutes before and after the event.

ACMA Member Carolyn Lidgerwood stated: “These regulations are designed to reduce potential harm from gambling advertising. Streaming services must have systems in place to ensure their ads comply with the law.”

ACMA issued a formal warning for the violation, noting: “This is Ten’s first breach of the rules regarding gambling ads in live sports, and they have cooperated fully with our investigation.”

Further breaches could lead to more severe enforcement actions, including financial penalties.
