bet365 has been fined for the second time in a month by New Jersey authorities, this time for $33,000, after accepting bets on events that had already concluded and on games not approved for betting.
The infractions occurred between February 2022 and January 2023, when the company mistakenly allowed wagers on completed events. For instance, in February 2022, pre-match odds were offered for the Louisiana-Lafayette vs. Arkansas-Little Rock basketball game, even though the game had started an hour early.
A similar issue arose with the Honda Golf Classic, where pre-match betting remained open four hours into the event. That same day, bets were placed on two MMA fights after they had ended. The Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) also found other incidents, such as a Professional Fighters League match that had taken place a week prior.
Additionally, bet365 accepted wagers on several lower-division European soccer games that had not been approved by New Jersey regulators and allowed bets on Rutgers University football, despite a state ban on wagering on in-state college teams.
While bet365 voided most of the bets, amounting to over $257,000, and refunded customers, the DGE noted that the company changed odds before paying out on winning bets without regulatory approval.
Interim DGE Director Mary Jo Flaherty stated that the division settled with bet365 after the company took “corrective actions” to address the violations. The errors were attributed to human mistakes, incorrect event timings, and software glitches.
Just a month prior, bet365 was fined over $519,000 after the DGE found that the company had been adjusting odds on 199 winning bets across 19 events over two years without informing the regulator.
