Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has had its license renewed for just two years following a tourism performance evaluation conducted by the Singapore Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA).
GRA pointed out the need for significant improvements to raise the casino’s standards.
Typically, licenses are granted for a three-year term, but this time the decision was based on a thorough analysis by GRA in collaboration with an independent evaluation panel. As noted by the authority, the panel concluded that “RWS’s tourism performance for the period of evaluation from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2023 was unsatisfactory, with a number of areas that require rectification and substantial improvement.”
The panel recommended a follow-up evaluation in 2026 after the two-year license renewal. The new license for RWS will take effect on February 6, 2025. During the review process, the opinions of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore Tourism Board, and Sentosa Development Corporation were also considered. In August, the country proposed a law that would set casino entry fees for Singaporean citizens and permanent residents at S$150 (US$111.9) per day and S$3,000 annually.
Later that month, former Chinese bankers were arrested in Singapore on money laundering charges.
In September, the government amended its Casino Act to allow cashless gaming while emphasizing that it has no plans to permit the use of cryptocurrencies.
Additionally, in July, Resorts World Sentosa’s CEO, Tan Hee Teck, was elected as the Singapore employers’ federation president.
