The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has announced the imminent implementation of new regulations governing online gambling.
This announcement follows President Prabowo Subianto’s emphasis on the need to swiftly enforce stricter measures to control the sector.
It has been reported that nearly one million websites have been blocked, but Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that this is insufficient to effectively combat online gambling. She emphasized the need for a more comprehensive regulatory framework to address the issue effectively.
Authorities have highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between various institutions, such as the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Law enforcement agencies, and the Attorney General’s Office. Cooperation among these institutions is considered a crucial element of the government’s broader strategy to combat online gambling in Indonesia.
“The President emphasised that handling online gambling must be stricter. One of the strategic steps that will be taken soon is the issuance of regulations in the form of Government Regulations (PP) that regulate more firmly and comprehensively,” said Meutya Hafid.
Regulatory efforts have intensified in early 2025. Within the first six days of the new year, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs blocked 43,063 digital items related to online gambling.
In other Asian countries, such as Thailand, new requirements have been introduced for locals wishing to visit casinos. According to the new rules, citizens must have at least ฿50 million ($1.48 million) in their accounts for at least six months, in addition to paying an entry fee capped at ฿5,000 ($148).
