Momentum in Macau’s gaming sector continues to build, with financial analysts forecasting that the market could see significant growth by the end of the year. Earlier government forecasts had been revised downward due to challenging conditions, primarily caused by Super Typhoon Ragasa.
In a research note, CreditSights stated that while the government’s forecast came as no surprise, analysts consider it too conservative.
The government expects GGR in 2025 to reach MOP 228 billion (approximately USD 28.4 billion). This projection was adjusted due to difficult market conditions. However, CreditSights believes that the original forecast of MOP 240 billion (around USD 29.9 billion) remains achievable, as tourism in the region continues to grow rapidly toward the end of the year.
“We expect that the strong visitation recorded during the recent Golden Week holidays will support higher GGR performance in October,” the analysts stated.
Golden Week is one of China’s biggest holidays, when thousands of tourists flock to Macau to take advantage of the region’s tourism and entertainment offerings. Casinos host numerous events during this period to make the most of the surge in visitors and boost revenue.
“We see Macau in a strong position to meet its 2025 GGR target. To do so, it needs to maintain an average monthly GGR of MOP 15.6 billion (USD 1.95 billion), compared to the current year-to-date average of MOP 20.1 billion (USD 2.51 billion) for the first three quarters.
If the current pace of monthly GGR growth continues, achieving the previous government target of MOP 240 billion is also quite possible,” the analysts added.
Macau’s tourism sector also received a boost this week with the return of the NBA after a six-year absence. Early data shows this led to a significant increase in tourist engagement and higher hotel occupancy rates.
The return of the NBA marks a further evolution of Macau’s tourism strategy, as the region continues to actively seek new ways to attract visitors and diversify its economy.
