Google has implemented two consecutive policy updates that will directly impact the marketing and visibility of real-money gaming and sweepstakes-style casino products across all regions.
On 28 October 2025, the company updated its “Gambling & Games advertising policy”, stating:
“Examples of games that aren’t social casino games: Sweepstake casinos.”
In an official clarification, Google added: Games that fall under the umbrella of real-world rewards are subject to the exact limitations and allowances of the online gambling policy.”
The revision removes the option for sweepstakes-style casinos — including those with dual-currency systems (e.g., using Gold Coins for play and Sweeps Coins redeemable for prizes) — to advertise under Google’s lighter social casino framework.
These apps will now be treated as fully regulated online gambling products. This requires operator licensing, country-specific certification, and mandatory responsible gambling messaging.
As sweepstakes products have long operated in a “regulatory grey area” in North America, the reclassification will likely make them ineligible for Google Ads marketing unless full gambling licences are obtained.
Affiliate and media partners promoting such products must now comply with the same advertising standards as licensed sportsbooks and online casinos or risk advertising account suspension.
Play Console Introduces Mandatory Age Blocking
On 30 October 2025, Google also announced the introduction of a new Age-Restricted Content and Functionality policy in Play Console, tightening child-protection requirements for Android developers. The notice states: “You will have at least 30 days from October 30 2025 to update your app to follow the new and updated policy changes.”
Additionally, Google notes:“To help protect children, the new policy requires apps with features that include matchmaking, dating, or real-money gambling/games/contests to use Play Console features to block minors.”
Developers have until the end of November to implement age-verification tools. Full enforcement begins on 28 January 2026, after which non-compliant apps may be removed or suspended from Google Play.
Stricter Oversight of Gambling Content
Together, these updates reflect the continued tightening of Google’s stance toward gambling products. Sweepstakes casinos lose their former “free-to-play” advertising pathway, while developers must demonstrate platform-wide compliance with youth safety standards.
Industry analysts see these changes as part of a broader global alignment: Google’s advertising and distribution services are now operating under unified standards reflecting local licensing rules, responsible gambling principles, and mandatory age verification.
