Turkish law enforcement authorities on Friday detained 32 people, including football club executives, as part of a widening investigation into alleged match-fixing and illegal betting in the country’s professional leagues, the Istanbul prosecutor’s office said.
According to the statement, investigators determined that the suspects had placed bets on matches involving their own teams, including wagers on opposing sides during official fixtures.
Operations to detain the suspects were carried out across 10 provinces, officials said, adding that police are still searching for one remaining suspect.
The prosecutor’s office did not disclose the names of those detained or specify which clubs they are affiliated with.
Turkey is continuing a broad campaign of investigations and detentions linked to illegal betting and match-fixing in its professional football leagues, including the top-tier Super Lig.
The Turkish Football Federation has suspended 149 referees and assistant referees for betting on matches, while dozens of individuals — including club chairmen, top-division players and sports commentators — have been detained or arrested as part of the probes.
