New Measures in Kazakhstan: Crackdown on Illegal Lotteries in Social Networks

According to the law of Kazakhstan, only the lottery operator and its authorized agents are permitted to run lotteries.

Currently, 16 citizens have been brought to administrative responsibility and fined 7 million tenge ($15,200) for organizing illegal sweepstakes on social networks.

Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan Miras Tulebaev said at a briefing at the Central Communications Service that fines ranging from 400 thousand ($8,800) to 3.7 million tenge ($81,600) are provided for organizing an illegal lottery.

“At the moment, 30 protocols on offenses have been sent to the court for consideration, and materials are being collected on another 35 facts to bring to justice for illegal pranks on social networks,” said the vice minister.

Earlier, the President of Kazakhstan signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On amendments and additions to certain legislative acts on issues of gambling, lottery activities, health protection, state labor inspection, state control and the elimination of unnecessary legislative regulation.” This law introduces restrictive and incentive measures aimed at reducing the population’s addiction to gambling.
