The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has released its Interim Performance Report for the first half of 2024, providing details on its regulatory activities and key performance indicators of the Maltese gaming industry.
From January to June 2024, MGA conducted 611 probity screenings of individuals and businesses operating in both the land-based and online gambling sectors. Twenty-nine cases were referred to the Fit and Proper Committee, which deemed seven applicants unsuitable.
During this period, MGA issued eight new licenses and renewed four.
To ensure regulatory compliance, the MGA carried out 11 audits, 49 remote reviews, and investigated 16 technical incidents. Enforcement actions included 20 warnings, 10 administrative penalties, and the revocation of eight licenses. The total amount of fines imposed reached €128,800 ($134,000), with regulatory settlements amounting to €61,522.
The MGA also continued its active work in player protection and promoting responsible gambling.
During the reporting period, assistance was provided to 1,625 individuals, 12 responsible gambling website checks were carried out, and 10 cases of misleading information were investigated.
The regulator also conducted 4,757 inspections of gaming establishments, including casinos and lottery outlets, to ensure compliance with regulations.
Notably, of the 15 gaming license applications reviewed, two were rejected due to the submission of false or incomplete information.
As part of its efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, the MGA conducted 23 inspections. As a result, the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit imposed fines totaling approximately €185,000 on MGA operators.
In the area of sports integrity, the MGA processed 162 reports of suspicious betting, initiated 17 investigations, and forwarded 143 notifications to stakeholders.
Internationally, the MGA reviewed 35 cooperation requests and issued 28 regulatory good standing confirmations for operators.
A comprehensive industry performance report for 2024 will be published in the second half of 2025, providing a more detailed analysis of key trends and developments.
