{"id":10486,"date":"2025-08-14T13:06:56","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T12:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=10486"},"modified":"2025-08-14T13:07:01","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T12:07:01","slug":"queens-wharf-brisbane-taken-over-by-hong-kong-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/08\/14\/queens-wharf-brisbane-taken-over-by-hong-kong-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen&#8217;s Wharf Brisbane Taken Over by Hong Kong Companies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Struggling Australian casino operator <strong>The Star Entertainment Group<\/strong> (The Star) has secured another financial lifeline after agreeing to offload one of its businesses to an East Asian group of businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has signed deals with Hong Kong-based <strong>Far East Consortium (FEC)<\/strong> and its subsidiaries, along with <strong>Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE)<\/strong> \u2013 collectively <strong>JV Partners<\/strong>, which will purchase one of its four resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once certain conditions are met, these agreements will allow The Star to leave i<strong>ts 50% ownership<\/strong> and management role in the <strong>Queen\u2019s Wharf Brisbane<\/strong> integrated resort \u2013 a multipurpose residential and entertainment precinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wendy Chiu<\/strong>, Executive Director and Joint Managing Director of FEC, explained that the agreements will enable the company to \u201ckeep the doors open\u201d and safeguard thousands of jobs in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She continued: \u201cEntering into this transaction demonstrates our firm commitment to be responsible corporate citizens and trusted partners to the Queensland Government and DBC\u2019s stakeholders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs Brisbane prepares for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we remain steadfast in our resolve to ensure QWB delivers lasting value for the people of Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Redeveloped into a <strong>AU$3.6bn (\u00a31,75bn)<\/strong> integrated resort starting in 2015, Queen\u2019s Wharf Brisbane didn\u2019t officially start opening, in stages, until 2024. It now aims to combine modern entertainment facilities with restored heritage buildings amidst the change in ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest deal follows many months of negotiations, whilst an earlier agreement fell through in August due to disputes about control of the Brisbane-based casino. That failed deal had apparently already cost The Star $10m in fees, and a further $31m payment is due in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, as part of the transaction, the JV Partners will acquire The Star\u2019s 100% stakes in the <strong>Treasury Hotel<\/strong> and<strong> Treasury Car Park<\/strong>, as well as its 50% interest in the <strong>Charlotte Street Car Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These three assets are in close proximity to Queen\u2019s Wharf and have been labelled as \u2018strategically critical\u2019 for guest experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In return, The Star will take over the JV Partners\u2019 combined <strong>66.67%<\/strong> interest in the <strong>Destination Gold Coast Consortium (DGCC)<\/strong>, comprising the <strong>Dorsett<\/strong> and <strong>Andaz<\/strong> towers in Broadbeach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, FEC and CTFE still have the chance to be involved if there\u2019s a new tower built at The Star\u2019s Gold Coast premises. However, the group must pay $20m if they choose to not take that option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FEC and CTFE are already in active discussions with potential new casino operators, according to <strong>The Australian Financial Review (AFR)<\/strong>, including<strong> Crown Resorts<\/strong> and SkyCity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, they have also struck an in-principle deal to refinance Queen\u2019s Wharf\u2019s $1.4bn debt which is due in December this year. Bally\u2019s and the Mathieson family\u2019s Investment Holdings have reportedly given unconditional consent to the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Star has been experiencing financial struggles for some time now. For example, in its 2023\/24 report the company reported losses totalling $1.7bn.
