Flutter has one of the country\u2019s strongest online brands in <strong>Sky Bet<\/strong> alongside the <strong>Betfair<\/strong> exchange and a retail presence in <strong>Paddy<\/strong> <strong>Power,<\/strong> as well as iGaming assets like <strong>Poker Stars.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entain, meanwhile, is a dominant force on the UK high-streets via its <strong>Ladbrokes<\/strong> and <strong>Coral<\/strong> betting shops, which of course also have an online counterpart. On top of this it runs the <strong>Gala<\/strong> bingo, <strong>Foxy Bingo<\/strong> and <strong>PartyCasino<\/strong> platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Publishing Q2 financials just a few days apart, Entain and Flutter both made gains in the UK but the former\u2019s was much more noteworthy than the latter\u2019s. For the UK &amp; Ireland region, Entain\u2019s NGR rose 9% to \u00a31.09bn, driven largely by online with retail continuing to struggle against changing UK market dynamics and customer preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing investors and analysts in the group\u2019s Q2 conference call, Group CFO and Deputy CEO <strong>Rob Wood <\/strong>explained how critical the UK had been to Entain\u2019s overall performance during the quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow have we grown ahead of the market? It\u2019s primarily due to the UK,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I look at growth over the past four quarters but strip out the UK, growth drops to just over 7%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cIn the UK we\u2019re very pleased with our performance and we\u2019re continuing to regain market share. Growth continues to be driven by player values, reflecting our improved player journeys, improved product and improved marketing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>Stella David,<\/strong> Entain CEO, the company\u2019s enhancements to its product across multiple brands has paid off, both in the UK and other markets. This has led to what the CEO calls \u201cgrowth not only in volume but in player values\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn top of the huge task of improving customer journeys we\u2019ve also been focusing on products and player experiences,\u201d she said, summarising Entain\u2019s product enhancement efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe apps are significantly faster, we\u2019ve enhanced our bet builder, in play, cash out and bet tracker, and players are loving our coins economy reward system as well as the benefits of having our exclusive games and content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to Entain, Flutter\u2019s UK&amp;I revenue was up<strong> by just 1% YoY to US$936m (around \u00a3689.3m at the time of writing<\/strong>), and although online casino segments performed well the firm\u2019s regional business was let down by a 12% decline in sports betting revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, on a global basis, Flutter remains unmatched. Flutter\u2019s Q2 group-wide revenue stood at $4.2bn, dwarfing Entain\u2019s entire H1 net gaming revenue of \u00a32.62bn. The key difference here is US exposure, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FanDuel drives a huge amount of NYSE-listed Flutter\u2019s revenue, and as such a lot of investor interest \u2013 on the firm\u2019s own recent investor call, the UK&amp;I segment was barely mentioned. In the UK, Entain appears to have lapped Flutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Product may be a key reason for this. While Flutter\u2019s UK brands and products, like Paddy Power, Sky Bet and Betfair, have a solid reputation for quality and service across the UK, there are occasional issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sky Bet in particular has been getting a bit of grief from customers on social media after an update earlier this year. Bettors have been taking to <strong>Reddit<\/strong> and <strong>Facebook<\/strong> to air their discontent with the updated app, and some reviews on sites like <strong>Trustpilot<\/strong> have also taken aim at the new format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SBC has reached out to Flutter about these social media complaints. However, the company did provide an update on the Sky Bet update and subsequent customer migration in its earnings call last week, revelaing that nine million customers have moved onto the new platform so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are also executing our cost efficiency program as we successfully migrated nine million Sky Betting and Gaming customers onto our shared UKI platform,\u201d said Flutter CEO <strong>Peter<\/strong> <strong>Jackson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will give customers access to new exciting features, which will include a version of our super sub product in time for the upcoming European football season. Reactions to the new Sky Bet customer proposition have been positive, and early performance on iGaming has been very strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the grand scheme of things though, Entain\u2019s updates to its sportsbook platforms may have simply proven more popular than its rival\u2019s, leading to better UK returns in Q2. Marketing investment may have also paid off for Entain, with it getting \u201cgood paybacks from its performance marketing\u201d, according to David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m confident that increasing the investment will fuel growth, but I\u2019m not going to get ahead of my boots because if I do and we have to do a reset you\u2019re not going to thank me if we have to go for additional growth before we establish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe performances this year have proved that there are really good reasons for continuing that momentum. We\u2019re in a different part of that journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entain is now taking steps to further build on its UK marketing with another campaign, \u2018Ladisfaction\u2019, coming just ahead of the <strong>Premier League<\/strong> and <strong>EFL Championship<\/strong> seasons commencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A focus on UK product and UK marketing may prove critical to Entain maintaining its growth trajectory in the market, though the company is not overly optimistic about its prospects. Last year was a tough year for the company with multiple reports showing UK growth declining, and leadership expects this to be a long process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood remarked: \u201cWe see opportunities to outperform market growth, potentially in the UK as we\u2019re still recovering market share and will see just how far that takes us.
