In their view, integrated resorts with casinos must be fully utilized to stimulate international tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>The Korea Bizwire<\/strong>, the issue was actively discussed at a two-day forum in Osaka last week, which brought together leaders of the gaming and tourism industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the speakers was <strong>Choi Chul-kyu<\/strong>, Acting CEO of <strong>Kangwon Land<\/strong> &#8211; the only casino in Korea where local residents are permitted to gamble. He expressed concern over the upcoming launch of Japan\u2019s first integrated resort, <strong>MGM Osaka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOsaka\u2019s integrated resort is geographically close and poses a serious competitive challenge for our industry,\u201d he said. It has been suggested that MGM Osaka could attract <strong>7.6 million<\/strong> South Koreans annually and siphon off <strong>US$1.9 billion<\/strong> in spending from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choi said that such an impact would not only affect Kangwon Land but also Korea\u2019s wider tourism industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suh Won-seok<\/strong>, president of the <strong>Korea Tourism Society<\/strong>, stated, \u201cFor Korea\u2019s casino and tourism industries to take off, we need new policies that go beyond the current framework.\u201d He did not, however, detail exactly what such changes should look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless,<strong> Gangneung-Wonju National University professor Lee Jae-seok<\/strong> said IRs must be treated as a central part of South Korea\u2019s ambition to attract <strong>30 million global visitors<\/strong> \u2013 calling on authorities to look at ways to ease restrictions while maintaining safeguards against gambling addiction, according to The Korea Biznews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce Osaka opens, many of Kangwon Land\u2019s customers could shift there,\u201d said Han Geum-seok, acting head of the company\u2019s casino division. \u201cWe must align our rules with global standards quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-day forum was hosted by the <strong>Korea Casino Integrated Resort Association and the Korea Tourism Society,<\/strong> and brought together around 50 officials and experts to assess the impact and implications of Osaka\u2019s integrated resort development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>US$9 billion <\/strong>MGM Osaka will, when it opens, become Japan\u2019s first and only licensed casino resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/sbceurasia\">Telegram channel<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Representatives of South Korea\u2019s tourism and casino industries have called for a review of the current regulatory framework.
