{"id":10646,"date":"2025-09-02T13:48:30","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T12:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=10646"},"modified":"2025-09-02T13:48:34","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T12:48:34","slug":"the-crown-prosecution-service-has-charged-former-gvc-executives-with-corruption-in-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/09\/02\/the-crown-prosecution-service-has-charged-former-gvc-executives-with-corruption-in-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"The Crown Prosecution Service Has Charged Former GVC Executives With Corruption in Turkey\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) <\/strong>has authorised the prosecution of eleven individuals linked to former Turkey-facing operations of <strong>GVC Holdings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst those charged are GVC Holdings former leadership team, ex-CEO <strong>Kenneth \u2018Kenny\u2019 Alexander<\/strong>, former CFO <strong>Richard Cooper, <\/strong>and former-Chairman <strong>Lee Feldman <\/strong>\u2014 who each face counts of conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to bribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexander and Feldman steered GVC Holdings for 13 years, transforming it into a FTSE 100 company through the landmark \u00a34bn ($5bn) leveraged acquisition of <strong>Ladbrokes Coral <\/strong>in 2018, a deal with led to the creation of Entain Plc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charges follow a long-running <strong>HMRC<\/strong> investigation into GVC\u2019s Turkey-facing business (which operated as <strong>Headlong<\/strong> Malta), covering the period 2011 to 2018, during which investigators suspected breaches of Section 7 of the Bribery Act 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further charges have been brought against <strong>Robert Douglas Edwin Dowling, Raymond Matthew Smart, Richard Anthony Raubitschek-Smith <\/strong>and<strong> James Patrick Humberstone<\/strong> for conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to bribe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexander MacAngus has been charged with conspiracy to defraud. Meanwhile, Scott William Masterton faces a wider set of charges, including fraudulent trading, cheating the public revenue, and acting as a director while an undischarged bankrupt. Caroline Patricia Roe has been charged with conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to bribe, fraudulent trading and evasion of income tax. Robert Hoskin has been charged with perverting the course of justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first hearing is scheduled for 6 October 2025 at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development follows Entain\u2019s decision in 2023 to set aside \u00a3585m (\u20ac680m\/$746m) to reach a settlement with the CPS. The charge contributed to the group posting a statutory loss of \u00a3900m ($1.125m) for FY2023, one of the largest losses in its corporate history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, Alexander and Feldman formed investment fund FS Gaming, with a view to acquire a significant shareholding in <strong>888 Plc<\/strong> (formerly <strong>Evoke Plc<\/strong>) and enact strategic changes to the underperforming business . However plans were halted due to the HMRC investigation of GVC activities in Turkey, which forced 888 investors to withdraw from negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the case, <strong>Hannah von Dadelszen<\/strong>, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Economic Crimes, said: \u201cThe CPS has authorised the prosecution of 11 individuals for seven offences relating to bribery, conspiracy to defraud, fraudulent trading, cheating the public revenue, evasion of income tax, acting as a director when undischarged bankrupt, and perverting the course of justice. These offences relate to the provision of gambling services in Turkey between 2011 and 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Richard Las<\/strong>, Director of HMRC\u2019s Fraud Investigation Service, added: \u201cThis has been a complex and international investigation. These are serious charges that relate to conspiracy to defraud, bribery, cheating the public revenue, evasion of income tax and perverting the course of justice among others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Kenny Alexander and&nbsp; Lee Feldman&nbsp; sued Entain and counsel Addleshaw Goddard, alleging withheld legal advice with regards to the charges made against them. Entain has called the claim \u201cwithout merit\u201d and vowed to contest it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entain has responded with a brief statement, noting that it \u201chas no further comment to make in respect these matters, which are the subject of ongoing criminal proceedings and reporting restrictions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court notice warned: \u201cThe Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are active and that they have a right to a fair trial.
