{"id":10690,"date":"2025-09-05T13:37:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T12:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=10690"},"modified":"2025-09-05T13:37:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T12:37:55","slug":"paqueta-cleared-in-betting-case-but-may-sue-fa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/09\/05\/paqueta-cleared-in-betting-case-but-may-sue-fa\/","title":{"rendered":"Paquet\u00e1 Cleared in Betting Case but May Sue FA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Football Association (FA<\/strong>) has officially cleared <strong>West Ham<\/strong> midfielder <strong>Lucas Paquet\u00e1<\/strong> of all spot-fixing charges following one of the most extensive integrity investigations in football history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Brazilian international still faces sanction for failing to cooperate with the inquiry \u2013 and UK media reports suggest he is now weighing up legal action against the governing body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>High-profile investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FA\u2019s investigation, which stretched over two years, centred on suspicions that Paquet\u00e1 deliberately received yellow cards in four Premier League fixtures \u2013 against <strong>Leicester City <\/strong>(November 2022), <strong>Aston Villa<\/strong> (March 2023), <strong>Leeds United <\/strong>(May 2023) and <strong>Bournemouth<\/strong> (August 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authority charged Paquet\u00e1 with four breaches of FA Rule E5.1, accusing him of attempting to \u201cinfluence the progress, conduct, or any other aspect of, or occurrence in these matches by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the improper purpose of affecting the betting market in order for one or more persons to profit from betting\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paquet\u00e1 consistently denied the allegations. \u201cAn independent Regulatory Commission has found the misconduct charges against West Ham United\u2019s Lucas Paquet\u00e1 for alleged breaches of FA Rule E5 to be not proven,\u201d the final ruling stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation \u2013 triggered by betting monitoring systems flagging unusual market activity \u2013 could have resulted in a lifetime ban. Instead, the charges were dismissed following a summer hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cooperation charges still proven<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the spot-fixing case collapsed, the commission upheld two breaches of FA Rule F3 relating to Paquet\u00e1\u2019s failure to fully cooperate with the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FA confiscated the midfielder\u2019s phone for two months during the inquiry, examining his messages, calls and financial records. When the device was later disposed of before a second request for inspection, the FA considered it non-compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These charges may result in a fine but no suspension is expected, meaning Paquet\u00e1 can continue to play for both club and country. The Regulatory Commission will confirm sanctions \u201cat the earliest opportunity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Personal toll and club support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case, described as extremely mentally damaging for the player, overshadowed Paquet\u00e1\u2019s career for more than two years and led to the collapse of a proposed \u00a380-85m ($100-107m) move to <strong>Manchester City <\/strong>in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the pressure, West Ham Vice Chair, <strong>Karren Brady<\/strong>, praised his professionalism: \u201cDespite the incredible pressure on him, Lucas has performed week in and week out for the club, always giving everything. It has been a difficult time for Lucas and his family, but he has remained absolutely professional throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After being cleared, Paquet\u00e1 issued a statement: \u201cSince the first day of this investigation I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations. I can\u2019t say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal fallout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/11095\/13424434\/lucas-paqueta-betting-charges-reasons-for-clearing-west-ham-midfielder-published-by-commission-fa-will-not-appeal-ruling\"><em>Sky Sports News<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Paquet\u00e1 is now considering suing the FA over the collapse of his Manchester City transfer and the reputational damage caused by the case. He is consulting his legal team on potential proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>West Ham, however, will not pursue damages. The club reportedly believes \u201cit is not good for football if clubs sue governing bodies who do a difficult job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FA has confirmed it will not appeal the decision and has declined to comment further until the commission\u2019s final written reasons are published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wider integrity implications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Paquet\u00e1 case underscores the FA\u2019s increased reliance on betting market intelligence and data-led detection tools to protect football\u2019s integrity.
