{"id":10929,"date":"2025-09-29T08:46:58","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T07:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=10929"},"modified":"2025-10-09T12:27:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T11:27:36","slug":"podcast-review-simon-westbury-on-industry-change-and-giving-1xbet-a-new-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/09\/29\/podcast-review-simon-westbury-on-industry-change-and-giving-1xbet-a-new-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast Review: Simon Westbury on Industry Change and Giving 1xBet a New Voice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this episode of<em> iGaming Accent,<\/em> host <strong>Vakho Mdivani<\/strong> welcomes <a href=\"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/01\/09\/success-story-in-10-questions-simon-westbury\/\"><strong>Simon Westbury<\/strong><\/a>, recently appointed as Strategic Advisor to <strong>1xBet<\/strong>, for a lively and candid conversation about career journeys, industry culture, and the evolving role of major brands in iGaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon\u2019s entry into iGaming was, as he puts it, \u201cpure luck.\u201d In 2007, he was asked to take over the Gaming Executive Summit (GES). \u201cThe premise was no more than 200 people in the room, but everyone was a decision maker.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recalls the unique culture of those early events, where networking and mentorship played a key role. \u201cMy mentor, Roger Withers, taught me how to present myself, how to host a table, and gave me the right words at the right time during my career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation turns to Simon\u2019s move from the <strong>UK <\/strong>to <strong>Armenia<\/strong>, a transition he describes as gradual but transformative. \u201cI started coming back and forth to Armenia in 2019\u2026 My role grew, and eventually I moved here. It wasn\u2019t planned, but you have to commit to whatever you do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlights the cultural differences, especially in workplace communication and emotional expression, and notes the significant role iGaming plays in Armenia\u2019s economy and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing his new role at 1xBet, Simon is frank about the brand\u2019s reputation and his motivation for joining: \u201cA lot of people mentioned the risk I was taking\u2026 but I didn\u2019t see risk, I saw opportunity. I believed in fairness, and I saw a real opportunity to give a big brand a voice and allow them to be heard.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasizes the company\u2019s openness and focus on results: \u201cThere\u2019s no real emotion, no complexes, no politics. You just get on and do your work and look at the results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simon\u2019s current focus is on industry engagement and building relationships: \u201cMy role is going to evolve\u2026 but for now, it\u2019s about engaging with the industry, getting out there, and showing that we\u2019re here to talk.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major topic is 1xBet\u2019s approach to sports sponsorship, including partnerships with FIBA, PSG, and Barcelona. Simon explains, \u201cSponsorship is about brand awareness, building trust, and contributing to the global development of sport. With basketball, it\u2019s genuinely tangible to see how the investment will come down to a grassroots level and actually improve the level of the sport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The episode also covers the launch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/international-player-safety-index-western-europe\/\">Player Protection Index report<\/a>, produced in partnership with <strong>SBC<\/strong>. Simon presented it at <strong>SBC Summit Lisbon<\/strong> last week. He pointed out: \u201cI was talking about the three Cs previous week: the need for clarity, the need for communication, and the need for consistency. However, on the flight back, I thought of a fourth C, and that is confusion. So above the need for clarity, communication, and consistency, sits confusion, and that was borne out by some of the findings from the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c43% of respondents were not happy with the player protection regulations in their primary jurisdiction. 26% wanted more clarity.
