{"id":11131,"date":"2025-10-16T10:17:33","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T09:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=11131"},"modified":"2025-10-16T10:17:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T09:17:36","slug":"slovakian-mps-propose-increasing-the-tax-rate-for-gambling-establishments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/10\/16\/slovakian-mps-propose-increasing-the-tax-rate-for-gambling-establishments\/","title":{"rendered":"Slovakian MPs Propose Increasing The Tax Rate For Gambling Establishments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Populist politics in <strong>Slovakia<\/strong> are turning their attention to gambling, with emerging proposals calling for higher tax rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposition party <strong>Slovakia Movement<\/strong> has alleged that the current taxation regime planned by the government will deprive the country of \u20ac52m ($55.6m) in annual tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a presser earlier this week, MPs <strong>Michal \u0160ipo\u0161<\/strong> and <strong>J\u00falius Jakab<\/strong> criticised the government for lowering an initial proposal of a \u20ac9,300 ($9 950) flat-rate levy for each individual device or table in land-based casinos, dropping it by between 40% and 60% instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160ipo\u0161 argued that large gambling operators deserve to be taxed more heavily, and that \u20ac52m ($55.6m) reduction will instead essentially serve them as a \u201ctax bonus\u201d. For him, higher taxation will level the playing field by forcing operators\u2019 hands to stop \u2018extorting people in Slovakia\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such a move could prove counterintuitive, however, as raising taxes could also force operators to increase their minimum player deposits, resulting in riskier play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160ipo\u0161 also suggested that Slovakia should follow the taxation models currently in place in <strong>Austria<\/strong> and <strong>Poland<\/strong> \u2013 a move which he said will bring the budget \u20ac300m ($321m) a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poland has one of the most aggressive taxation models in Europe, currently at 50% of GGR for land-based casinos and slot machines outside of physical venues. Austria also has a GGR-based tax rate for brick-and-mortar, currently at 30%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Slovakia<\/strong> on the other hand has adopted a hybrid model, where casinos and gaming halls are taxed by the flat-rate levy per device, plus a GGR tax of 27%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is this flat-rate levy that has become the main point of contention for the Slovakia Movement. The rates approved by the government are currently set at \u20ac4,700 ($5,030) for each device directly operated by players, \u20ac4,400 ($4,708) for each slot machine in a gaming hall, and \u20ac6,000 ($6,420) for each video terminal located in a land-based venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>J\u00falius Jakab<\/strong>, a fellow MP of \u0160ipo\u0161, added that the government\u2019s refusal to bring these rates up to \u20ac9,300 ($9 950)&nbsp; is poor decision making in his eyes, especially when Slovakians have increased their average gambling spend fourfold, according to estimates that he cited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople lost one and a half billion in gambling last year.
