{"id":11325,"date":"2025-10-31T10:55:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=11325"},"modified":"2025-10-31T10:56:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T10:56:13","slug":"new-zealand-is-considering-raising-the-tax-on-online-gambling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/10\/31\/new-zealand-is-considering-raising-the-tax-on-online-gambling\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand Is Considering Raising the Tax on Online Gambling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new draft provision to increase social funding from <strong>online gambling<\/strong> has been tabled in the <strong>New Zealand government.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill to regulate the sector passed first hearing back in <strong>mid-July<\/strong>, reaching a Select Committee for a review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hon Brooke van Velden<\/strong>, Minister of Internal Affairs, who is spearheading the initiative, has now drafted another proposal, based on public feedback, that would see the envisioned Offshore Gambling Duty being raised from 12% to 16% \u2013 with the 4% difference set aside to fund community initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe message from communities was loud and clear \u2013 if we\u2019re regulating online gambling, they want to see benefits flow back to local sports clubs, community groups, and grassroots organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have listened, and now as a government, we are delivering on what matters most to communities across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Velden was also clear that this would not take away from the government\u2019s efforts to push the black market away and reduce gambling harm in the island nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If fully approved, the legislation will launch an online casino market in New Zealand with up to 10 licence holders. This has been met with a mixed response from the existing industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sky City<\/strong>, New Zealand\u2019s largest casino operator, has protested the development, although <strong>Entain<\/strong> \u2013 which holds the exclusive right to operate sports betting in the country \u2013 appears more relaxed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Velden explained the government\u2019s motives further: \u201cProblem gambling prevention and harm minimisation standards are non-negotiable and unchanged. Protecting Kiwis from gambling harm is still my number one objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now, Kiwis are gambling on thousands of overseas websites with no safety nets, no spending limits, and no recourse when things go wrong. That\u2019s unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis Bill brings those operators under New Zealand law, with proper consumer protections, harm minimisation measures, and now \u2013 community benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently under review by a Select Committee, if the Bill becomes enacted the government will conduct a two-year review which will assess the community returns impact of online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis evidence-based review will inform necessary adjustments allowing us to make informed policy decisions based on real-world data in future,\u201d van Velden concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is new money on top of existing funding from pokies, Lotto, and TAB.
