{"id":11453,"date":"2025-11-13T09:14:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T09:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=11453"},"modified":"2025-11-13T09:15:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T09:15:00","slug":"hearing-on-austracs-lawsuit-against-entain-set-for-november-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/11\/13\/hearing-on-austracs-lawsuit-against-entain-set-for-november-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"\u200b\u200bHearing on AUSTRAC\u2019s Lawsuit Against Entain Set for November 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Federal Court of Australia<\/strong> has scheduled a hearing for <strong>30 November 2026<\/strong> regarding <strong>AUSTRAC\u2019s lawsuit against Entain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After completing its investigation into <strong>Neds, Bookmaker.com.au, and Ladbrokes Australia<\/strong>, AUSTRAC filed a lawsuit against <strong>Entain Australia<\/strong> in <strong>December 2024<\/strong>, citing <strong>systematic violations of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation covers Entain\u2019s commercial activities from <strong>December 2019 to December 2024<\/strong> and focuses on the company\u2019s alleged failure to maintain adequate AML\/CTF controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit claims that Entain\u2019s brands operated with insufficient customer verification measures and inadequate source-of-funds checks. They also allegedly allowed cash deposits and third-party channels, exposing the company\u2019s betting network to the risk of criminal misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this period, AUSTRAC strengthened its oversight of licensed gambling operators, imposing record fines &#8211; including <strong>AU$450 million on Crown Resorts<\/strong> and <strong>AU$67 million on SkyCity Entertainment<\/strong> for AML\/CTF violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year after the lawsuit was filed, Entain\u2019s board confirmed that its Australian subsidiary would <strong>dispute several of the regulator\u2019s allegations<\/strong>, while <strong>acknowledging past weaknesses<\/strong> in its compliance system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company stated that it has <strong>completely restructured its AML framework<\/strong>, including closing all cash-deposit channels, increasing its AML staff tenfold, and investing heavily in new monitoring and control systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Court has given AUSTRAC until<strong> 10 April 2026<\/strong> to present its evidence, and Entain until<strong> 6 August 2026<\/strong> to submit its response. The possibility of settlement before trial remains open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If no agreement is reached, the 2026 hearing will become the <strong>first full Federal Court trial under the AML\/CTF Act involving an online betting operator<\/strong>, with <strong>E<\/strong>ntain potentially facing fines worth hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Entain has stated that it will not make any operational changes in Australia regardless of the trial\u2019s outcome. The company continues to view its <strong>Australian and New Zealand operations as key to long-term growth<\/strong>, actively investing in market share expansion and strengthening its position in one of the world\u2019s most competitive betting markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Entain\u2019s leadership &#8211; <strong>CEO Stella David<\/strong> and <strong>CFO Rob Wood<\/strong> &#8211; the case represents a final chapter in resolving legacy compliance issues the company is determined to close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After years of investigations and enforcement actions in the UK and Australia, Entain aims to draw a line under past violations and restore the confidence of regulators and investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <strong>Andrew Vouris,<\/strong> CEO of Entain Australia and New Zealand, previously noted: \u201cWe followed expert advice at the time but, looking back, we recognise the old programme missed the mark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve acknowledged our shortcomings, taken responsibility, and spent the last two years learning from them and fixing them.
