{"id":11468,"date":"2025-11-14T07:34:56","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=11468"},"modified":"2025-11-14T07:35:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:35:00","slug":"flutter-reports-financial-losses-from-indias-real-money-gaming-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/11\/14\/flutter-reports-financial-losses-from-indias-real-money-gaming-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Flutter Reports Financial Losses from India\u2019s Real-Money Gaming Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Flutter<\/strong> has reported significant financial losses following India\u2019s decision to ban <strong>real-money games (RMG)<\/strong>, a law that was enacted back in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s leadership stated that the \u201cextremely disappointing\u201d move cost Flutter <strong>$556 million<\/strong> in impairment charges related to the withdrawal of its <strong>Junglee<\/strong> brand from India. This was the main reason for the group\u2019s <strong>$789 million net loss<\/strong> in the third quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Promotion and Regulations of Online Gambling Bill 2025<\/strong>, passed without consultation with industry stakeholders, came as a surprise to the market. It forced both domestic operators &#8211; such as <strong>Dream11<\/strong> and <strong>Mobile Premier League<\/strong> &#8211; and international companies, including Flutter, to halt all real-money gaming operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were frustrated at the speed with which the bill that emerged came into law,\u201d Flutter CEO Peter Jackson told investors during Flutter\u2019s Q3 earnings call.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would hope we might get some more sort of legal clarity around the extent to which some of these games of skill may be able to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flutter had acquired a<strong> majority stake in Junglee Games in 2021 for $70 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the $556 million write-off, the company also lost a significant portion of the <strong>$200 million in revenue<\/strong> it had expected to generate from Junglee\u2019s business in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free-to-play versions of Junglee\u2019s games remain available in India, and according to Jackson, Flutter still hopes to return<strong> <\/strong>to the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson confirmed that the company is continuing to do \u201call the lobbying and legal challenges that you\u2019d expect\u201d and likened the situation to the <strong>US<\/strong>\u2019 black friday in 2011, when the US Government seized the domains of many of the biggest online poker sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that long ago that we saw black friday in America, and look where we are today. We\u2019re going to maintain the Junglee product on a free-to-play basis, and we\u2019ll see what happens,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only operator to file a legal challenge against the ban so far has been <strong>Head Digital Works<\/strong>, the parent company of <strong>A23<\/strong>, which called the law a \u201cproduct of state paternalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a filing to the <strong>High Court of Karnataka<\/strong>, reviewed by <em>Reuters<\/em>, A23 warned that the new law \u201ccriminalizes the legitimate business of skill-based online games and would result in the overnight closure of numerous gaming companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flutter\u2019s exit from the Indian market came at a time when the industry was booming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the prohibition, India\u2019s gaming sector was valued at <strong>$3.7 billion<\/strong> and, according to the <strong>India Gaming Report 2025<\/strong>, was projected to reach <strong>$9.1 billion by 2029<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures clearly show India\u2019s strong appetite for gaming.
