{"id":11543,"date":"2025-11-21T11:24:39","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=11543"},"modified":"2025-11-21T11:24:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:24:44","slug":"meta-wins-antitrust-case-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2025\/11\/21\/meta-wins-antitrust-case-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta Wins Antitrust Case in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A US federal judge has ruled that <strong>Meta<\/strong> does not hold a social media monopoly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Federal Trade Commission (FTC)<\/strong> filed an antitrust lawsuit against the <strong>Facebook<\/strong> owner in 2020 over its acquisitions of <strong>WhatsApp<\/strong> and <strong>Instagram<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It accused <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/featurednews\/2025\/10\/28\/meta-and-tiktok-could-face-hefty-fine-for-breaching-eu-online-rules\/\">Meta<\/a> of operating a \u2018buy or bury\u2019 scheme against its nascent competitors. The tech giant bought Instagram for $1bn in 2012, and WhatsApp for $19bn in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling means Meta does not have to restructure or sell Instagram and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Meta spokesperson said: \u201cOur products are beneficial for people and businesses and exemplify American innovation and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to continuing to partner with the administration and to invest in America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe Simonson<\/strong>, a spokesperson from FTC, added it was \u201cdeeply disappointed in this decision\u201d and will be \u201creviewing all our options\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At trial, the FTC drew attention to a series of Facebook\u2019s (as the company was called back then) statements about the deals, including a 2008 email from CEO <strong>Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong>, which said \u201cit is better to buy than compete\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Meta argued the social media landscape has shifted from the days when Facebook was used to share photos and personal updates. It claimed the FTC had ignored competitive pressure from <strong>Google\u2019s YouTube, ByteDane\u2019s TikTok<\/strong> and <strong>Apple\u2019s<\/strong> messaging app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also stated it believed its main competitors in the market were <strong>Snapchat<\/strong> and <strong>MeWe<\/strong> (a small, privacy-focused social media app) as well as <strong>X<\/strong> (formerly <strong>Twitter<\/strong>), and <strong>Reddit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also defended the acquisitions saying it was a valid business strategy rather than building competitor products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US District Judge <strong>James Boasberg<\/strong> in Washington agreed mostly with Meta\u2019s arguments, adding that the FTC had incorrectly excluded YouTube and TikTok when it challenged its dominance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe landscape that existed only five years ago when the Federal Trade Commission brought this antitrust suit has changed markedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if YouTube is out, including TikTok alone defeats the FTC\u2019s case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This ruling is the first win for big tech against the antitrust crackdown, which started during Donald Trump\u2019s first term as president.
