{"id":12108,"date":"2026-01-27T11:55:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12108"},"modified":"2026-01-30T12:07:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T12:07:20","slug":"the-betting-market-brought-brazil-over-9-billion-r9bn-in-tax-revenue-in-its-first-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/01\/27\/the-betting-market-brought-brazil-over-9-billion-r9bn-in-tax-revenue-in-its-first-year\/","title":{"rendered":"The Betting Market Brought Brazil Over 9 Billion R$9bn in Tax Revenue in Its First Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Brazilian state reaped big financial rewards from the gambling sector in the first year of the new regulated market, according to the\u00a0<strong>Federal Revenue Service (FRB).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a breakdown of 2025 taxes, the FRB specifically highlighted that revenue from \u2018activities related to gambling\u2019 stood out among various other business sectors last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gambling tax revenue jumped hugely from R$91m ($17.3 m) in 2024 to R$9.9bn ($1.88bn)&nbsp; in 2025, which the FRB states \u2018is a direct reflection of the sector\u2019s regulation, with rules that came into effect in 2025\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulated betting market, known as <strong>\u2018Bets\u2019<\/strong>, went live on 1 January 2025 after years of deliberation under the presidential administrations of both <strong>Jair Bolsonaro <\/strong>(2019-2023) and <strong>Lula Da Silva<\/strong> (2023-present).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market went live with 68 initial licence holders, both domestic companies and multinationals. <strong>The Secretariat of Bets and Prizes(SPA)<\/strong>, part of the Ministry of Finance, revealed in early 2025 that it was still processing hundreds of applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the global sector, major international companies like <strong>Kaizen Gaming <\/strong>via its <strong>Betanobrand<\/strong>, Romania-founded <strong>Superbet<\/strong> (now <strong>Super<\/strong>), UK-based <strong>Entain<\/strong> via its <strong>Sportingbet<\/strong> and betboobrands, and Irish-American giant <strong>Flutter Entertainment<\/strong> have all set up shop in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was widely expected in the build up to the Brazil market launch that the new sector would quickly become one of the biggest in the world, and early statistics proved this. Figures from&nbsp;January-September 2025, for example, revealed R$3.3bn ($623.7m)&nbsp; in taxes and levies from R$28bn ($5.29 bn) in gross gaming revenue (GGR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quick growth, quick taxation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revelation of how big Brazil\u2019s betting taxes stood at the end of the year comes ahead of a crucial inflection point for the sector, however \u2013 this inflation point being the forthcoming implementation of new taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Lula signed off the tax raises in late December 2025, having been eyeing up the young betting industry as a revenue stream to support his social spending and investment ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new framework will see taxes increase from the current rate of 12% to 15% by 2027 and 18% by 2028.
