{"id":12353,"date":"2026-02-25T07:16:33","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T07:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12353"},"modified":"2026-02-25T07:16:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T07:16:39","slug":"uk-to-ban-unlicensed-gambling-operators-from-premier-league-sponsorships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/02\/25\/uk-to-ban-unlicensed-gambling-operators-from-premier-league-sponsorships\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to Ban Unlicensed Gambling Operators from Premier League Sponsorships"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The UK Government<\/strong> is planning to show a red card to unlicensed gambling sponsorships of British sports teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prohibition would encompass sponsorships in <strong>the Premier League<\/strong>, where clubs are viewed as one of the most valuable global assets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy<\/strong> has stated that it is \u2018not right\u2019 that gambling companies not licensed in the UK can \u2018raise their profile and potentially draw fans towards sites that don\u2019t meet our regulatory standards\u2019, through their association with Premier League clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, <strong>the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS)<\/strong> is gearing up to begin a consultation on sports sponsorship in Spring as a way to mitigate the risks associated with the illegal market and eliminate \u2018unfair competition\u2019 for regulated operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) <\/strong>rules state that sports teams can maintain partnerships with entities not licensed in the UK, but must ensure that customers in the UK cannot access the platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Premier League sides such as <strong>Fulham (SBOTOP), Bournemouth (bj88), Wolves (DEBET) and Burnley (96.com)<\/strong> have maintained links to unlicensed gambling companies, which DCMS claims often lack measures to protect consumers and fail to adhere to responsible advertising standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of SBOTOP and DEBET, the operators accessed the UK through a white-label agreement with <strong>TGP Europe<\/strong>. However, TGP exited the UK after the UKGC issued the firm a \u00a33.3m penalty for due diligence and AML failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nandy emphasised: \u201cWhen placing a bet on the big match, fans deserve to know the sites they\u2019re using are properly regulated, with the right protections in place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Going beyond the Premier League ban<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the beginning of the next season, Premier League teams will be banned from agreeing front-of-shirt sponsorships from the gambling industry, following a league-wide decision made in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, no such rules are currently in place from the league regarding gambling\u2019s placement on shirt sleeves, training wear, or the advertising hoardings that surround pitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These latest reports demonstrate that the UK Government is seeking to close this loophole when it comes to the unlicensed sector and get tough on such operators using the Premier League, and the wider English sports ecosystem, as a vehicle to court domestic and international visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although sponsorship agreements with the unlicensed sector are most common in the Premier League, current Championship side <strong>Leicester City<\/strong> maintains <strong>BC.Game <\/strong>as its principal partners despite backlash from fans, and <strong>Birmingham City<\/strong> recently announced <strong>Duelbits<\/strong> as its Asian betting partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these deals would no longer be permitted if DCMS were to push through new legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consultation also sits alongside the recent formation of an illegal gambling task force, which is seeking to bring together banking and social media firms with law enforcement to tackle the black market by reducing illegal operators\u2019 advertising on social media and preventing payments to unlicensed sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gambling Minister Baroness Twycross <\/strong>added: \u201cWe know the real harm that unregulated gambling can cause, exploiting vulnerable people and leaving consumers without the protections they deserve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis consultation, alongside the work of our Illegal Gambling Taskforce, shows how seriously this government is taking the issue.
