{"id":12511,"date":"2026-03-17T07:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T07:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12511"},"modified":"2026-03-17T07:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T07:56:12","slug":"dutch-opposition-calls-for-ban-on-online-gambling-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/03\/17\/dutch-opposition-calls-for-ban-on-online-gambling-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch Opposition Calls for Ban on Online Gambling Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Opposition parties in the Netherlands have put forward a proposed motion to significantly clamp down on online gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mirjam Bikker <\/strong>and <strong>Sarah Dobbe<\/strong>, the respective leaders of the <strong>ChristenUnie (CU) <\/strong>and <strong>the Socialist Party (SP)<\/strong>, have argued that the rate of problem gambling among Dutch citizens has increased in proportion to the number of players since the online market was re-regulated in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both parties stated that since the reform\u2019s introduction, around 450,000 new gamblers have joined the market and that young adults, generally 18- to 21-year-olds in the Dutch context, account for around 22% of all current online gambling accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bikker said: \u201cThe slot machine is now literally in your pocket, and in shopping streets you see gambling ads everywhere. It is time for a complete advertising ban.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opposition calls for a stronger regulator<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides the blanket ban on online gambling ads, Bikker and Dobbe have also called for updates to the national self-exclusion scheme <strong>Cruks<\/strong>, with the minimum self-exclusion period being brought up from six to 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding operators found to be in breach of the gambling framework, the opposition duo also wants expanded powers for the regulator, the <strong>Kannspelautoriteit (KSA)<\/strong>, to issue penalties of up to 100% of the operator\u2019s annual revenue \u2013 as opposed to the current maximum cap of 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows last week\u2019s record \u20ac25m fine<a href=\"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/03\/12\/ksa-hits-offshore-operators-with-nearly-e27m-in-fines\/\"> imposed <\/a>by the KSA on <strong>Novatech <\/strong>for illegally targeting the Dutch market without a valid licence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of the fine, KSA Chairman <strong>Michel Groothuizen<\/strong> commented: \u201cA fine of \u20ac24m sounds impressive, but without the maximum of 10% the fine would have come to more than \u20ac100m; an amount that would be better suited to this violation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the fines are amended in line with the SP and the CU proposal, it still raises the question of how they will be enforced for offshore operators.
