{"id":12589,"date":"2026-03-25T12:33:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T12:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12589"},"modified":"2026-03-25T12:33:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T12:33:21","slug":"estonian-official-to-sue-after-dismissal-over-gambling-law-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/03\/25\/estonian-official-to-sue-after-dismissal-over-gambling-law-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Estonian Official to Sue After Dismissal Over Gambling Law Error"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A long-serving adviser of <strong>Estonia\u2019s Riigikogu Chancellery<\/strong> who was dismissed over a clerical error in the Gambling Tax Act is set to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official, revealed by the Estonian publication <strong>Eesti<\/strong> <strong>Rahvusringh\u00e4\u00e4ling (ERR)<\/strong> to be <strong>Piia Schults<\/strong>, said she is \u201cshaken\u201d by her \u201cterrible\u201d mistake but feels it is her \u201cduty to take the matter to court\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The act was passed in December last year, resulting in online casinos being exempted from tax in 2026 as Estonia looks to establish itself as an iGaming hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The error, now revealed to be Schults\u2019, was noticed in January and has since been corrected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estonia\u2019s remote gambling tax will drop from 6% to 4% by 2029, then decline in 0.5% increments each year, with all funds generated going towards culture and sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the error has already caused huge repercussions, as the state is set to lose approximately \u20ac4m in projected gambling tax revenue for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Schults, who carried a stellar reputation as an adviser for over three decades, during which no other criticism has been made about her, is in contact with a lawyer to contest the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She told ERR that she believes the case is \u201cultimately a matter of values\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have to challenge this. Perhaps it will also encourage colleagues,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou simply cannot treat a person this way. I will challenge this on behalf of all of them, with my colleagues and Estonian society in mind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe people have the right to know what is happening in the public sector. These are not separate containers \u2013 we all live here in small Estonia, in plain view of one another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chancellery Director <strong>Antero Habicht<\/strong> provided a written response to the nationwide publication on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaking all the circumstances into account, this was unavoidable and necessary; it was no longer possible to continue with a relationship based on trust,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBased on current information, the official will turn to the courts to defend her rights and therefore, we do not consider it possible to comment further publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInitiating formal proceedings is always a last resort. As a rule, problems are discussed confidentially and handled verbally.
