{"id":12849,"date":"2026-04-29T09:44:35","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:44:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12849"},"modified":"2026-04-29T09:44:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T08:44:38","slug":"the-star-entertainment-cuts-losses-after-cost-saving-measures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/04\/29\/the-star-entertainment-cuts-losses-after-cost-saving-measures\/","title":{"rendered":"The Star Entertainment Cuts Losses After Cost-Saving Measures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Star Entertainment Group<\/strong> is beginning to see the effects of its cost-saving measures, as its EBITDA has improved significantly in the third quarter compared to the same period the previous year, although it is still at a loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cost-saving measures implemented by the Australian casino operator include a refinancing agreement with <strong>WhiteHawk Capital Partners.<\/strong> This was in addition to a binding long-term documentation with <strong>Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Limited<\/strong> and <strong>Far East Consortium International Limited<\/strong> regarding the <strong>Queen\u2019s Wharf Brisbane<\/strong> and <strong>Gold Coast <\/strong>resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streamlining took place at the group\u2019s corporate offices, which are under new leadership following the completion of <strong>Bally\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>Corporation<\/strong> and <strong>Investment Holdings\u2019 <\/strong>A$300m strategic investment late last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Star mentioned in its report: \u201cOther initiatives, including with respect to administrative functions at each property and opportunities to reduce indirect costs and supplier expenses, continue to be explored to support long-term financial success of The Star and to further strengthen the group\u2019s financial position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Star improves EBITDA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Q3, which is the three months ended 31 March 2026, The Star reported revenue of AUS$266m (approximately \u20ac163.2m), down 12% in comparison to the previous quarter (Q2: $301m) and 1% year-on-year (YoY) (Q3 2025: $268m).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, EBITDA improved by 96% YoY to a loss of $1m (Q3 FY25: $24m loss) before significant items. Available cash stood at $90m as of 31 March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Star noted that the Q3 results reflected \u2018a seasonal softening in revenues and reduced levels of gaming visitation in Sydney\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although improvements to EBITDA were achieved, the operator reemphasised that its \u2018ability to continue as a going concern remains dependent on the outcome of numerous material uncertainties\u2019, some of which are interdependent and outside of its control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Financials per venue:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Star Sydney:<\/strong> Revenue \u2013 $147m, EBITDA \u2013 $4m loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Star Gold Coast: <\/strong>Revenue \u2013 $101m, EBITDA \u2013 $8m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Star Brisbane: <\/strong>Revenue \u2013 $15m, EBITDA \u2013 $4m loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treasury Brisbane: <\/strong>Revenue \u2013 $3m, EBITDA \u2013 $1m loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, the <strong>New South Wales Independent Casino Commission (NICC) <\/strong>extended the licence suspension of The Star Sydney casino once again, with <strong>Nicolas Weeks<\/strong> remaining as manager of the establishment until 30 September 2026 unless terminated at an earlier date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NICC Chief Commissioner <strong>Philip Crawford<\/strong> said at the time: \u201cThe new owners are making significant changes to the operation of the business, which are being monitored closely by the NICC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis includes work to make the business more financially sustainable in the long term, which will assist them in demonstrating suitability.
