As the enormous fiscal pressure of war continues to weigh heavily, Vladimir Putin<\/strong> is looking to tap into the gambling sector to alleviate the burden on the Russian economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports are suggesting that Putin has signed off on the creation of a sixth gambling zone<\/strong> in a country where gambling is otherwise prohibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gambling zone is set to be located in the Altai Republic<\/strong>, a mountainous region, seemingly underpinning a focus on gambling as a tourist attraction rather than a local destination, as other zones are situated in locations such as Crimea, Sochi, Krasnodar, Primorye, and Kaliningrad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the gambling zone is set to be placed in close proximity to and intertwined with the Manzherok ski resort<\/strong>, further underpinning its close association with the tourism sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports suggest that the developers have pencilled in around 300m (\u00a32.95M) rubles to be secured from taxation as a result of the move, which will be seen as a crucial incentive for the country\u2019s overall economic picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2009 marked the prohibition of gambling in Russia. However, a gradual opening of gambling zones has taken place over the following years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This latest development marks the second gambling zone within the Altai region, and the sixth overall. The very first zone designated in 2007 was in the Altai region, however, it wasn\u2019t officially built until 2014. The last of the zones created was in Crimea in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin has always objected to gambling legislation and viewed the sector as significantly harmful to society. However, he has begrudgingly acknowledged through the opening of the zones its effectiveness as an economic tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the newer builds in Sochi has provided a major chunk of tax income from the gambling zones, accounting for around 765m rubles (\u00a37.3M) according to media reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Altai was one of the lower regions in terms of taxation revenue. However, the government clearly remains optimistic that the ceiling is much higher than is currently being reached as it looks to build a new revenue stream in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
