{"id":12975,"date":"2026-05-14T12:51:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12975"},"modified":"2026-05-14T12:51:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T11:51:03","slug":"super-group-demonstrates-international-growth-amid-tax-pressure-in-the-uk-on-betway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/05\/14\/super-group-demonstrates-international-growth-amid-tax-pressure-in-the-uk-on-betway\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Group Demonstrates International Growth Amid Tax Pressure in the UK on Betway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Africa again led the way for <strong>Super Group <\/strong>during the first quarter of the year, but the <strong>Betway<\/strong> parent company is also gaining momentum in Europe despite tricky regulatory and taxation circumstances in its home continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like countless other gambling firms, both public and private, the <strong>Guernsey-based, NYSE-listed<\/strong> gambling group is having to contend with challenging circumstances in Europe, not least a\u00a0hefty new tax rate on iGaming in Betway\u2019s core market of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s Q1 accounts showed group-wide revenue of $612m (\u00a3452.3m), up 18% year-over-year from $517m in Q1 2025. Profit and adjusted EBITDA also rose respectively YoY by 31% to $86m (Q1 2025: $59m) and 26% to $152m ($111m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European revenue rose 15% from $96m to $113m. The group\u2019s Betway sportsbook and Spin casino brands are active across various European markets, including the UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the UK, Super Group has been confident that it will be able to weather the storm of the new 40% tax on <strong>Remote Gaming Duty (RGD)<\/strong>, and potentially carve out market share. It\u2019s not alone in holding these ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Entain, Flutter Entertainment <\/strong>and <strong>evoke<\/strong> have all expressed similar sentiment \u2013 but the firm\u2019s Q1 results, albeit covering a period prior to the new RGD rate coming into effect on 1 April, suggest that it has a strong standing in Europe, where the UK is arguably its most important market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the grand scheme of things however, Europe is far from the most important continent for Super Group. Africa and the Americas, chiefly Canada in the latter, stand out as the two largest regional markets for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa should be no surprise here, having been the biggest growth driver for Super Group across multiple quarters now. In Q1 2026, revenue came in at $267m, up 24% from $201m the year prior, while Americas revenue rose 5% from $186m to $195m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was achieved despite the group fully exiting the US in July 2024, showing the significance of Ontario as a market for Super Group. The forthcoming launch of a regulated multi-licence market in Alberta later this year could further drive Americas revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cQ1 2026 was a record-breaking start to the year for Super Group, with all-time highs in revenue, monthly active customers, deposits, and wagering,\u201d said <strong>Neal Menashe<\/strong>, Chief Executive Officer of Super Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur performance reflects the strength of our strategy, the power of our brands, and the discipline of our team. Africa delivered another excellent quarter, while our International segment continued to gain traction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, 2026 has been a successful year for Super Group \u2014 at least from a financial standpoint. The firm is not immune to encountering hurdles, however, and this year the firm has run into one in New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lawsuit against <strong>SkyCity Entertainment Group<\/strong> regarding online casino operations\u00a0was widened last month to include Super Group and <strong>bet365<\/strong>. This has not deterred the firm\u2019s ambitions in New Zealand, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pacific nation plans to launch a regulated online casino market with 15 licensees on 1 July 2027. The Online Casino Bill has been approved by parliament, and is now awaiting Royal Ascent, paving the way for interested companies to apply for licences \u2013 Spin being one such firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Zealand aside, Super Group continues to make efforts to strengthen its brands\u2019 management and image.
