{"id":12995,"date":"2026-05-18T08:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T07:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=12995"},"modified":"2026-05-18T08:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T07:46:13","slug":"bulgaria-tightens-oversight-gli-experts-assess-compliance-of-the-gambling-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/05\/18\/bulgaria-tightens-oversight-gli-experts-assess-compliance-of-the-gambling-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulgaria Tightens Oversight: GLI Experts Assess Compliance of the Gambling Industry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Government and Regulatory Affairs team at Gaming Labs International (GLI)<\/strong> met with officials from the Bulgarian regulator to exchange ideas on how to strengthen the local sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lucas Zavarise<\/strong>, Manager of GLI\u2019s Government and Regulatory Affairs unit, traveled to Sofia with colleague <strong>Kevin Kostreci,<\/strong> GLI\u2019s Manager of Technical Compliance, for a face-to-face discussion with <strong>Bulgaria\u2019s National Revenue Agency (NRA).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>LinkedIn<\/em>, Zavarise commended the discussion that focused on Bulgaria\u2019s market developments and regulatory framework as \u201ckey to more effective, practical, future-ready regulation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further highlighted that such exchanges are high on GLI\u2019s agenda, given the gambling sector\u2019s rapid evolution in technology, products, and regulatory expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zavarise and Kostreci were joined by <strong>Martin Yakimov<\/strong>, Head of Gambling at <strong>Velchev &amp; Co. <\/strong>Law Office, alongside <strong>Alexander Popov<\/strong>, Director of Gambling Oversight at the NRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popov unveiled more details about the meeting for <em>SBC News<\/em>, adding that GLI has expressed particular interest in how the Bulgarian regulator operates when it comes to the use of artificial intelligence in gambling products, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He commented: \u201cThe meeting with GLI was on the occasion of their newly formed unit for Government and Regulatory Affairs. The meeting was constructive and in a spirit of understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe colleagues from GLI wished to introduce themselves and provide an opportunity to create a channel for interaction regarding the regulator\u2019s requirements for gaming software and gaming equipment that are applied for registration by organisers of gambling games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe discussed some private cases, which I will refrain from commenting on, but we also discussed what the regulator\u2019s attitude would be towards games containing elements based on artificial intelligence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe topic of our conversation was also the increasingly popular \u2018virtual sports\u2019 and \u2018esports\u2019 and their treatment by the regulator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bulgaria recently went through a snap election, with the center-left coalition of former President and current Prime Minister <strong>Rumen Radev <\/strong>scoring a landslide victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With populist politics increasingly spreading across Eastern Europe, SBC News recently spoke with the <strong>Association of Organisers of Gambling Games and Activities in Bulgaria(AOGGAB) <\/strong>about what the local sector expects from the new government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Milen Totev<\/strong>, AOGGAB Chairman, then commented: \u201cWe expect legislative initiatives. Our position is that any significant change should be discussed with the industry, the regulator and the experts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the state wants a stronger economy, it should not treat one legal sector only as a problem.
