{"id":13513,"date":"2026-07-16T08:38:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T07:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=13513"},"modified":"2026-07-16T08:38:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T07:38:59","slug":"hungary-replaces-management-of-state-owned-gambling-operator-szerencsejatek-zrt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/07\/16\/hungary-replaces-management-of-state-owned-gambling-operator-szerencsejatek-zrt\/","title":{"rendered":"Hungary Replaces Management of State-Owned Gambling Operator Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt<\/strong>, Hungary\u2019s state-owned gambling and betting operator, has undergone a sweeping overhaul of its board and leadership, sanctioned by the new <strong>TISZA<\/strong> government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Finance and Economy Minister <strong>Andr\u00e1s K\u00e1rm\u00e1n <\/strong>announced the appointment of <strong>Marcell Olajos <\/strong>as Chairman of Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt, marking the first major shake-up of the operator since <strong>P\u00e9ter Magyar\u2018s <\/strong>government took office on 9 May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>K\u00e1rm\u00e1n said that the changes will fulfil TISZA\u2019s pledge to remove political influence and cronyism from state enterprises, restoring transparency, accountability and professional governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restructuring follows the dismissal in late June of <strong>Zolt\u00e1n Guller<\/strong>, former Chairman of Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt and a senior tourism official under <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2018s Fidesz<\/strong> administration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guller had overseen one of Hungary\u2019s most strategically important state enterprises, which retained a monopoly over the national lottery and a dominant position in the retail sports betting market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective 15 July, board members <strong>Krisztina R\u00e9dey, G\u00e1bor Bord\u00e1s, Szabolcs \u00c1gosth\u00e1zy <\/strong>and<strong> Zs\u00f3fia Ill\u00e9s-Puka<\/strong> have been removed, while <strong>Marianna Gabriella Poltn\u00e9 Pal\u00e1sthy<\/strong> has resigned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poltn\u00e9 Pal\u00e1sthy, the wife of former Prosecutor General P\u00e9ter Polt, criticised the board\u2019s removal in comments to Hungarian media, describing it as a \u201cpolitically motivated purge\u201d and accused TISZA of engaging the same practices it had accused the Fidesz of carrying out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announcing the overhaul, K\u00e1rm\u00e1n declared that \u201cpolitical influence and unauthorised advantage are a thing of the past\u201d at Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt., pledging \u201ccorruption-free and transparent management\u201d across Hungary\u2019s public enterprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes form part of a wider review of state-owned organisations launched following TISZA\u2019s election victory in April. The programme is viewed as central to Prime Minister <strong>P\u00e9ter Magyar\u2019s <\/strong>efforts to revive an economy that has lagged at the bottom of the EU member state ranks for the past three years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the review, the government will examine Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt\u2019s governance, monopoly privileges and the distribution of gambling revenues under the previous administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Particular attention will be placed on how state gambling profits were allocated through sponsorships and public funding during the Fidesz era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The review could also shape the future direction of Hungary\u2019s gambling market. Although the country opened its online sports betting market to European Economic Area operators in 2023, analysts believe that the government may revisit concessions inherited from the Orb\u00e1n administration while considering reforms to improve transparency and competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt. generating more than \u20ac3bn ($3.44bn) in annual revenue and contributing around \u20ac447m ($514m)&nbsp; in taxes and regulatory payments, any reforms are expected to focus on governance rather than dismantling the state\u2019s dominant role in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As TISZA moves to reorganize Szerencsej\u00e1t\u00e9k Zrt, it remains unknown whether PM Magyar or FM K\u00e1rm\u00e1n will review the <strong>Gambling Act of 1991.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Orban administration undertook the process from 2022 to 2023, with the aim to bring new competition to market by liberalising Hungary\u2019s sports betting market.
