{"id":13629,"date":"2026-07-28T12:25:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=13629"},"modified":"2026-07-28T12:25:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:25:56","slug":"polymarket-to-fight-french-block-amid-prediction-market-regulation-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/07\/28\/polymarket-to-fight-french-block-amid-prediction-market-regulation-dispute\/","title":{"rendered":"Polymarket to Fight French Block Amid Prediction Market Regulation Dispute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Polymarket<\/strong> has vowed to fight the French gambling regulator\u2019s block of its platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York firm argues that the <strong>Autorit\u00e9 Nationale des Jeux\u2019s (ANJ) <\/strong>block against its French online presence \u201ctargets people going to Polymarket purely for information, not to trade\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polymarket is adamant that \u201cmost people come to Polymarket solely to learn the probability of future events relevant to their everyday life with no intention to trade\u201d and that \u201cprediction markets help source truth\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are disappointed by the French gaming authority\u2019s sudden decision to unilaterally block our website \u2013 we intend to challenge this decision through the legal process in France,\u201d Polymarket\u2019s statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough we disagree with the ANJ\u2019s action, France has demonstrated a strong commitment to financial and technological innovation, and our recent discussions with French authorities have been constructive and encouraging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue these productive conversations because we believe in a future built on innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Polymarket v France<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ANJ\u2019s outright block against Polymarket followed a 2024 block on financial transactions to the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This prevented users from depositing into accounts and making trades, but enabled them to continue viewing the site and its activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polymarket is adamant that it has complied with the 2024 transactions block, but has continued allowing French users to access its platform as an \u201cinformation source\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prediction markets have evolved in recent years, partly as a result of regulatory pressure but also due to the increasing use of the platforms as opinion polls \u2013 reflected in media partnerships such as <strong>Kalshi\u2019s<\/strong> deal with <strong>CNN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm added that despite the block and its plans to legally challenge the ANJ, it wants to \u201cengage constructively\u201d with French authorities and is working with the cybercrime unit of the Paris Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPolymarket remains committed to operating in a manner that meets applicable regulatory expectations while preserving the benefits of prediction markets for its users,\u201d its statement continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company should not be overly surprised by the scrutiny it is facing in France given the ANJ\u2019s criticism of prediction markets over the past year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The regulator made its position that prediction markets are a form of illegal gambling crystal clear way back in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polymarket \u2013 which runs a global predictions platform based on the Polygon blockchain with transactions conducted via the US dollar-pegged USDC stablecoin \u2013 is no stranger to regulatory confrontation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm has already been blocked by Portugal, Romania, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ukraine, to name a few examples in Europe, while also facing regulatory pressure in Singapore and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also exiled from its home nation of the US between 2022 and 2025, but was able to return as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) stance on prediction markets eased up during the second Trump administration, enabling its return last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the regulatory picture around prediction markets took a different trajectory this month.
