{"id":13908,"date":"2026-09-02T09:02:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T08:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=13908"},"modified":"2026-09-02T09:02:39","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T08:02:39","slug":"competitive-macau-landscape-intensifies-as-world-cup-rebound-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/09\/02\/competitive-macau-landscape-intensifies-as-world-cup-rebound-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Competitive Macau Landscape Intensifies as World Cup Rebound Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rebound of <strong>Macau\u2019s gambling sector<\/strong> off the back of a World Cup dip continued into August, when the region reported an 8% increase in revenue from July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With such a significant reliance on VIPs at the tables in Macau, shifts in engagement during the World Cup can have a real impact on operators&#8217; overall performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers represent a stabilisation for the region, despite a dip of just 1% from the same period last year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macau is uniquely positioned in the Asian landscape, meaning that the market is exposed to elevated levels of VIP volatility and fluctuation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, even amid wider sector challenges and the drag of the World Cup for VIP players, Macau is still forecast to end the year in a strong position in terms of overall revenue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first half of 2026, <strong>Galaxy\u2019s<\/strong> mass GGR grew 12% year\u2011on\u2011year, while VIP GGR fell 32% in Q2 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This enabled the operator to grow its market share closer to <strong>Sands China<\/strong>, the region&#8217;s leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as pressure grows from other market players, Sands China remains the market leader in Macau. However, its EBITDA share slipped to a record low in Q2 as unfavorable win rates and a softer mix of high\u2011value visitors weighed on results, even as gaming volumes improved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also cited the impact of fewer top\u2011tier VIPs and ongoing suite and facility works at <strong>Londoner Macao<\/strong> as key burdens on overall revenue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Galaxy isn\u2019t the sole challenger to Sands, which speaks to the fiercely competitive landscape in Macau&#8217;s current market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market has intensified since 2025, when the halting of the satellite law stopped third-party hotels from running casino floors and reshaped the landscape for operators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of the reforms was a push to diversify Macau\u2019s economy, with an ambitious goal of around 60% of GDP from non\u2011gaming by 2030, while tightening control over VIP and junket channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonetheless, the increase in overall visitor and tourist numbers, which have continued to grow throughout 2026, will support optimism about these ambitious income diversification targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t forget to subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/sbceurasia\">Telegram channel<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rebound of Macau\u2019s gambling sector off the back of a World Cup dip continued into August, when the region reported an 8% increase in revenue from July.
