{"id":13952,"date":"2026-09-08T08:23:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=13952"},"modified":"2026-09-08T08:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T07:24:08","slug":"the-uk-market-awaits-the-fcas-decision-on-prediction-markets-and-binary-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/09\/08\/the-uk-market-awaits-the-fcas-decision-on-prediction-markets-and-binary-options\/","title":{"rendered":"The UK Market Awaits the FCA\u2019s Decision on Prediction Markets and Binary Options"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)<\/strong> is poised to revisit whether consumers should have greater access to investments, potentially putting the UK ban on retail binary options back under the spotlight this September and clearing a route for prediction markets to launch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ban was enforced in 2019, with the regulator citing concerns that retail investors could incur significant financial losses, and the risks involved might not be properly understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prediction markets themselves \u2014 specifically those offering financial markets \u2014 are currently labeled by the FCA as speculative products because of the binary options they offer, which has landed them a permanent ban \u201cgiven the speculating, gambling-like nature of these contracts and the high risk of consumer harm\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, following the regulator\u2019s Discussion Paper on expanding consumer access to investments, the FCA has clearly stated that it will consider \u201cwhether further work on access to these products is needed\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper was opened in December 2025, inviting relevant stakeholders to share their views on what the FCA can do to improve consumer confidence in investing, with speculative products being one of the categories explicitly covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the paper\u2019s closure in March, the FCA committed to a set timeline to provide an official statement on the feedback in Q3, which we are already approaching the end of.
