{"id":14010,"date":"2026-09-15T09:19:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T08:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=14010"},"modified":"2026-09-15T09:19:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T08:19:28","slug":"match-fixing-suspicions-create-new-risks-for-estonias-online-gambling-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/09\/15\/match-fixing-suspicions-create-new-risks-for-estonias-online-gambling-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Match-Fixing Suspicions Create New Risks for Estonia\u2019s Online Gambling Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A football match in <strong>Estonia\u2019s second tier<\/strong> has been curtailed over suspected match-fixing, representing another red flag for the jurisdiction and its ambitions to become Europe\u2019s next major hub for iGaming licences.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Esiliiga match between <strong>FC Tallinn<\/strong> and <strong>Maardu Linnameeskond <\/strong>was abandoned on Thursday due to suspected betting fraud.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FC Tallinn, who currently sit in the relegation zone, had scored three goals in seven minutes to put themselves 4-2 up \u2014 one of which was a penalty,&nbsp; just minutes before the referee called a halt to proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result sees Maardu face allegations of disciplinary breaches, including integrity violations, sports betting, match manipulation, and unreported misconduct, according to Estonian publication <strong><em>ERR<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not good news for Estonia\u2019s iGaming plans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news of a fallout in Estonian football comes as political sensitivities are divided on the government\u2019s plan to reduce income taxes on gambling licences as part of the economic programme of the <strong>Reform-Eesti 200 <\/strong>coalition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A target of 4% of gross gaming revenue (GGR) tax by January 2029 has been authorised by the Riigikogu, carrying the majority support of Eesti 200 Party, but splitting ranks amongst members of Reform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the leadership of former PM <strong>Kaja Kallas,<\/strong> Eesti 200 pitched the tax reduction as an economic incentive to attract iGaming operators and related businesses to the Balkan nation \u2014 matching income tax rates to that of EU member state Malta.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet, a year on from its authorisation, the coalition is split as PM <strong>Kristen Michal <\/strong>has ordered an early review of the tax reduction incentive.
