{"id":14273,"date":"2026-10-16T08:39:58","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T07:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=14273"},"modified":"2026-10-16T08:40:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T07:40:06","slug":"dutch-regulator-focuses-on-big-tech-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/10\/16\/dutch-regulator-focuses-on-big-tech-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Dutch Regulator Focuses on Big Tech Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Michel Groothuizen,<\/strong> Chairman of the Dutch gambling authority <strong>Kansspelautoriteit (KSA),<\/strong> says all options are on the table to hold Big Tech companies accountable for allowing illegal gambling ads to target Dutch customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a special blog post published on the five-year anniversary of the online market\u2019s re-regulation, Groothuizen addressed an issue that has proved quite the headache for the regulator over the past year: illegal gambling adverts on social media platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most prominent example has been <strong>Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram<\/strong>, with the issue escalating to the point that licensed online gambling trade body <strong>VNLOK<\/strong> recently summoned Meta to court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VNLOK is challenging Meta over claims that \u201c90% of all gambling ads on Facebook in the Netherlands showcase illegal operators\u201d, according to VNLOK\u2019s own analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s extremely disappointing to see the lack of (pro)activity at Meta,\u201d <strong>Bj\u00f6rn Fuchs<\/strong>, Chairman of VNLOK, told SBC News.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Battling Big Tech\u2019s big resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Groothuizen added that if companies facilitating such advertising remain insufficient in their work, he believes the KSA should be able to reprimand them, at least with a financial penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA sheriff who shoots and misses or one who turns out to be shooting with a clapper gun, gives the bandits a carte blanche,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBig Tech makes a lot of money from the ads of illegal gambling providers, in the Netherlands, in Europe, and worldwide. Imposing substantial restrictions on oneself does go very against the revenue model. Yet that is what we demand of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chairman fell short of announcing a full-blown legal crusade against Big Tech and Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), noting that such companies have deep pockets that could drag a court battle for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Groothuizen said the KSA will first seek a more collaborative approach, such as its current partnership with <strong>Google,<\/strong> where both entities work together to devise a \u201cwhite-list\u201d of EU-licensed operators that can then be used to actively block all others from being promoted online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, he added that all options to seek responsibility are on the table, with the legal path remaining a potential course of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we find that the VLOPs do not make sufficient efforts for us, or are not sufficiently effective despite their voluntary efforts, the legal path will of course always remain open.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is what we do while at the same time preparing for a possible confrontation.
