{"id":14313,"date":"2026-10-21T12:21:47","date_gmt":"2026-10-21T11:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=14313"},"modified":"2026-10-21T12:21:50","modified_gmt":"2026-10-21T11:21:50","slug":"hippos-atg-secures-finnish-market-entry-for-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2026\/10\/21\/hippos-atg-secures-finnish-market-entry-for-2027\/","title":{"rendered":"Hippos ATG Secures Finnish Market Entry for 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swedish gambling firm <strong>Hippos ATG<\/strong> has secured a licence to go live in <strong>Finland<\/strong> once the licensed market opens up on 1 July 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company, co-owned by <strong>AB Trav och Galopp <\/strong>and <strong>Suomen Hippos ry,<\/strong> will offer horse racing and sports betting services to Finnish customers, alongside its full suite of online casino games already available in Sweden and Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most importantly, ATG will aim to build long-term economic value for horse racing in Finland, with trotting among the country&#8217;s most popular spectator and betting sports after ice hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On LinkedIn, <strong>Antti Koivula, <\/strong>Chief Compliance Officer at Hippos ATG, commented: \u201cA big thank you to the entire Hippos ATG team for the work that has brought us to this point, and to our owners, AB Trav och Galopp and Suomen Hippos ry, for their support, expertise and commitment throughout the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Koivula has been vocal about his reservations about aspects of the gambling framework under which ATG will launch next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finland\u2019s marketing rules under question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late last year, Finland\u2019s parliament voted to abolish the current outgoing gambling monopoly under state-owned operator <strong>Veikkaus Oy,<\/strong> something the operator itself has supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new multi-licence regime, coming into effect in July 2027 after several deadline pushbacks, will cover online betting and gaming, and will leave the National Lottery exclusively in the hands of Veikkaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some intricacies of the gambling regulation have drawn criticism from iGaming experts such as Koivula, particularly over how licensed operators will be able to market themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the current provisions, affiliates are completely banned from operating in the country, raising questions about how effectively newcomers can gain market share once they land in Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am still a bit worried about the marketing regulation and especially the enforcement,\u201d Koivula said during a panel discussion at this year\u2019s <strong>SBC Summit Lisbon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProhibiting traditional customer acquisition channels such as affiliates\u2026I don\u2019t see that as a good option; it\u2019s really bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In previous interviews with SBC News, Koivula said the decision to ban affiliates was based on a misinformed perception that their business is inherently bad, given its previous and current illegal status under Finnish law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn essence, the perception was that affiliates were influencers who are aggressively pushing gambling marketing towards people, including the most vulnerable groups, as if all affiliates were the same. That picture is, of course, far from accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany affiliates operate in a highly responsible way and do meaningful responsible work themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat said, the false perception was clearly there. The main reason for that, which is rather understandable, was that affiliate marketing in Finland was and still is illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <strong>H2 Gambling Capital <\/strong>estimates cited by the Finnish government, the domestic market peaked around 2017, reaching a total value of \u20ac2bn under the consolidated monopoly model.
