{"id":4802,"date":"2024-02-27T14:32:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T14:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=4802"},"modified":"2024-02-27T14:33:10","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T14:33:10","slug":"lula-challenged-to-include-betting-exemptions-in-new-tax-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/02\/27\/lula-challenged-to-include-betting-exemptions-in-new-tax-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Lula Challenged to Include \u2018Betting Exemptions\u2019 in New Tax Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The subject of tax exemptions on gambling prizes\/winnings will be debated once more by the government of <strong>Brazil.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows the government\u2019s backing of <strong>Provisional Measure <\/strong>(1,206\/2024), which seeks to revise the monthly income tax exemptions for public wages up to BRL 2,824 (\u20ac530).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PM is reported to be favored by President <strong>Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva,<\/strong> as a pledge of the Workers\u2019 Party (PT) made during the 2022 General Election to revise Brazil\u2019s income tax brackets for the benefit of ordinary workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, the PT government will propose to Congress \u201cchanges in the monthly Income Tax (IR) table to ensure exemption for individuals earning up to two minimum wages, approximately 2,824 reais.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a modification proposed by Federal Deputy of Sao Paulo (SP),<strong><em> Fernando Marangoni,<\/em><\/strong> seeks to include sports betting prizes\/winnings for tax exemption under the proposed tax tranches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 2 January, President Lula da Silva signed Bill No. 3,626\/2023 into federal law, authorising the legislative framework for Brazil to launch its federal sports betting marketplace, locally referred to as \u2018Bets\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the President\u2019s final revision, Lula vetoed articles from the <strong>Economic Affairs Commission (CAE)<\/strong> that recommended tax exemptions for yearly winnings below the R$2,112 (\u20ac400) threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands, the Bets framework will apply a 15% tax on all prizes\/winnings generated by customers, a levy widely opposed by industry stakeholders as discriminatory to the launch of Brazil\u2019s federal marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clashing with Lula, Marangoni is demanding \u2018prize exemptions\u2019 in the proposed income tax brackets.
