{"id":6088,"date":"2024-06-28T13:36:53","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T12:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=6088"},"modified":"2024-06-28T13:36:58","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T12:36:58","slug":"greek-opap-secures-exclusive-gambling-license-in-cyprus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/06\/28\/greek-opap-secures-exclusive-gambling-license-in-cyprus\/","title":{"rendered":"Greek \u200b\u200bOPAP Secures Exclusive Gambling License in Cyprus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Under the new agreement, the Greek company <strong>OPAP <\/strong>will become the sole legal operator in <strong>Cyprus<\/strong>, with all other operators banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OPAP, which has been operating in Cyprus since 1969, already offers a variety of games through its network of over 200 land-based stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OPAP executive chairman <strong>Kamil Ziegler<\/strong> said: \u201cWe are particularly happy to have signed the new fifteen-year concession agreement with the Republic of Cyprus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a group, we have been active in Cyprus for 55 years, providing popular games and engaging experiences to our customers, supporting common goals and implementing social initiatives with significant impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur commitment is that we will continue on the same path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new \u20ac447 million contract will allow OPAP to operate under a stricter regulatory framework overseen by the <strong>National Betting Authority.<\/strong> The government emphasized that the deal aims to protect the public interest, enhance market supervision, combat illegal gambling, and promote responsible gaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OPAP will pay an annual performance-based license fee, starting with an initial payment of \u20ac4.2 million, with subsequent installments due each January. Additionally, the company will pay taxes equal to 22.5% of its gross profits and contribute 5% to sports, social, and community events. The agreement requires OPAP to generate at least \u20ac20 million for the island\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finance Minister <strong>Makis Keravnos<\/strong> highlighted that the agreement safeguards Cyprus\u2019s interests by ushering in a new era for the gambling sector.
