{"id":6453,"date":"2024-08-06T09:29:07","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T08:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=6453"},"modified":"2024-08-06T09:29:11","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T08:29:11","slug":"dazn-clinches-ligue-1-broadcast-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/08\/06\/dazn-clinches-ligue-1-broadcast-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"DAZN Clinches Ligue 1 Broadcast Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>France\u2019s <strong>Ligue 1 McDonald\u2019s<\/strong> has agreed a five-year deal worth a reported \u20ac500m per year with <strong>DAZN and BeIN Sports<\/strong> giving the broadcasters the rights to screen matches from the country\u2019s top football league.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to press reports, DAZN will pay<strong> \u20ac400m per year <\/strong>to screen eight Ligue 1 matches every matchday on an exclusive basis, while BeIN Sports will run one match per week every Saturday evening for<strong> \u20ac100m per year<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement marks the end of long-winded negotiations between the <strong>Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP<\/strong>) and potential rights holders that have seen the price of the rights drop significantly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talks started in September 2023 to thrash out the next five-year deal and LFP, which up to this year was receiving <strong>\u20ac700m per year<\/strong> from the likes of <strong>Canal+<\/strong> and BeIN Sports, was hoping to receive offers of around<strong> \u20ac1bn per year<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reported \u20ac500m annual fee is therefore a substantial drop on LFP\u2019s current package and reflects broadcasters\u2019 refusal to pay over the odds, even for what are considered to be premium rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Canal+, Amazon Prime, DAZN, and BeIN Sports<\/strong> were the main contenders for the rights, but as the \u2018historic\u2019 sports broadcaster in France, it has held rights to top-flight football in the country since its launch in 1983, Canal+ pulled out of the bidding process. The group\u2019s CEO <strong>Maxime Saada<\/strong> accused the LFP of deliberately inflating its prices and said it was demanding \u201creserve\u201d prices of \u20ac800m to push out contenders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For DAZN, the move is another step in its rollout across major <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/marketing\/2024\/07\/31\/dazn-to-broadcast-englands-national-league-on-global-platform\/\">European markets<\/a>. The group is a licensed sports betting operator in the UK and Germany and launched broadcasting operations in France last year as part of a distribution agreement with Canal+. It also owns the rights for Spain\u2019s La Liga, Italy\u2019s Serie A and Germany\u2019s Bundesliga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO<strong> Shay Segev<\/strong> told<strong> L\u2019\u00c9quipe<\/strong> last year that DAZN wanted to be \u201ca major actor\u201d on France\u2019s TV landscape and become \u201cthe home of sport\u201d where consumers would be able to purchase match tickets, merchandising or bet on sports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to L\u2019Equipe, the new deal with LFP can be terminated after two seasons if DAZN fails to attract<strong> 1.5 million subscribers<\/strong>, while an automatic <strong>\u20ac50m bonus<\/strong> payment will be triggered if it reaches that number of subscribers after the partnership\u2019s first season. BeIN Sports\u2019 contract is understood to be for an initial three-year period that can be extended to five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shay Segev said the agreement meant DAZN will \u201ccreate an unrivalled destination for French football fans\u201d and will help \u201cLigue 1 McDonald\u2019s grow in reach, audience and value\u201d. \u201cWe can help deliver that with our fan-focused innovative approach to production, marketing and distribution.
