{"id":6477,"date":"2024-08-08T11:03:11","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T10:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=6477"},"modified":"2024-08-08T11:03:16","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T10:03:16","slug":"australian-labor-party-faces-criticism-over-alleged-gambling-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/08\/08\/australian-labor-party-faces-criticism-over-alleged-gambling-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian Labor Party Faces Criticism Over Alleged Gambling Ties"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Australia\u2019s Labor government <\/strong>has landed in hot water after independent MPs expressed concerns that the latest gambling ads reforms are favouring gambling companies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/companies\/labor-accused-of-cop-out-over-gambling-ad-changes-20240804-p5jzaj.html?utm_source=ground.news&amp;utm_medium=referral\"><strong>Sydney Morning Herald<\/strong><\/a>, sources close to the matter have said that Communications Minister <strong>Michelle Rowland<\/strong>&nbsp; wants to limit gambling ads on TV to two per hour until 10 pm, and ban them one hour before and after live sporting events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talks to also introduce a blanket ban on betting ads on social media and digital communication channels are also reportedly being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet to be brought forward to cabinet and most likely still not in their final form, the proposals are already amassing stern looks by independent political figures and reformists who want a tougher stance against ads, the Herald wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For comparison, the late Labor MP <strong>Peta Murphy<\/strong> requested a ban on all forms of gambling advertising on TV, radio, newspapers and online platforms back when she was chairing a parliamentary inquiry into the matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>David Pocock<\/strong> \u2013 an independent senator \u2013 pitted current LAbor plans against those of Murphy and painted them as an unsatisfactory continuation of what she started.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is support in the parliament for the government to implement the Murphy review recommendations in full rather than this watered-down policy aimed at appeasing the gambling industry,\u201d the Herald reported Pocock as saying.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn overwhelming majority of Australians want to see strong action to address the enormous harm gambling causes. The Albanese government needs to find the courage to stand up to gambling companies and do what\u2019s right for our community rather than caving again to pressure from vested interests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional comments were also made by independent MP <strong>Kate Chaney<\/strong>, who said: \u201cPeople who are experiencing problems with gambling find it impossible to escape ads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are ads everywhere you look. With ads still appearing on TV, on radio, in arenas and on jerseys, gambling will remain embedded in sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government has an opportunity to lead and leave a legacy, by making ads for online gambling history, like we did with tobacco decades ago.
