{"id":6845,"date":"2024-09-13T12:10:05","date_gmt":"2024-09-13T11:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=6845"},"modified":"2024-09-13T12:10:10","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T11:10:10","slug":"singapore-gambler-ordered-to-repay-au38m-to-star-gold-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/09\/13\/singapore-gambler-ordered-to-repay-au38m-to-star-gold-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Gambler Ordered to Repay AU$38M to Star Gold Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a rare victory for the troubled <strong>Star Entertainment Group<\/strong>, the <strong>Brisbane Supreme Court<\/strong> has ruled that a Singaporean man, who accumulated gambling debts exceeding <strong>AU$38 million (US$25 million)<\/strong> at <strong>The Star Gold Coast<\/strong>, must repay the amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justice <strong>Melanie Hindman<\/strong> dismissed claims made by <strong>Dr. Yew Choy Wong<\/strong>, who argued that Star had agreed to waive the debt due to errors made by a baccarat dealer during some of his sessions. Star Entertainment denied making any such agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision follows Star\u2019s previous unsuccessful attempt to enforce the debt in Singapore, where the <strong>Singapore International Commercial Court<\/strong> ruled in <strong>2020<\/strong> that the country&#8217;s Civil Law Act prohibits the enforcement of gambling debts incurred in foreign jurisdictions. Despite Dr. Wong\u2019s objections that pursuing the claim in Australia was an abuse of process, the <strong>Queensland Supreme Court<\/strong> granted Star permission to pursue damages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case, described as the largest casino debt ever filed in a Singapore court, centers on money lost by <strong>Dr. Wong at The Star Gold Coast\u2019s VIP tables<\/strong> in <strong>2018<\/strong>. Dr. Wong claimed that a senior casino executive, Paul Arbuckle, assured him he would not be responsible for losses up to <strong>July 29, 2018<\/strong>, due to dealer mistakes, nor for any future losses if further errors occurred. After another mistake on <strong>August 1,<\/strong> Wong said he immediately stopped playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nature of the loan extended by The Star Gold Coast to Dr. Wong was also contested. Star argued that Wong requested and was granted a check cashing facility for<strong> AU$40 million<\/strong>, later increased by another <strong>AU$10 million<\/strong>.
