{"id":7356,"date":"2024-10-30T13:03:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-30T13:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=7356"},"modified":"2024-10-30T13:03:31","modified_gmt":"2024-10-30T13:03:31","slug":"brazil-partially-delays-investigation-into-the-impact-of-betting-on-the-economy-and-sports-integrity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/10\/30\/brazil-partially-delays-investigation-into-the-impact-of-betting-on-the-economy-and-sports-integrity\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil \u201cPartially Delays\u201d Investigation Into the Impact of Betting on the Economy and Sports Integrity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Senate of Brazil has \u201cpartially delayed\u201d the <strong>Commission of Inquiry (CPI) <\/strong>investigations aimed at reviewing the laws, standards, and protections of the Bets regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CPIs will serve as the Senate\u2019s evaluation of Brazil\u2019s fixed-odds and online gambling market under the Bets framework, scheduled to launch in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate\u2019s evaluation, assigned to the <strong>\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/featurednews\/2024\/10\/15\/brazil-senate-bets-cpi\/\"><strong>CPI of Bets,<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d<\/strong> will examine the financial impact of online gambling on Brazilian citizens, communities, and family finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the <strong>\u201cCPI of Integrity\u201d<\/strong> will assess the threats and exposure of Brazilian sports (professional and amateur) to gambling manipulation and fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, the Senate confirmed it had delayed the CPI of Bets as it has yet to decide which Senators will work on the inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senator <strong>Soraya Thronicke<\/strong> from Mato Grosso do Sul, who proposed the CPI to the Senate, will serve as the inquiry\u2019s rapporteur but has not yet been assigned a team. Thronicke has been granted 130 days and a budget of R$ 110,000 ($19.250) to conduct the CPI\u2019s evaluation of financial impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, concerns have been raised about the broad scope of the inquiry, which must assess the economic effects of the Bets market on family finances, debt, and individual exposure to financial risks, criminality, and money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inquiry was authorized following \u201calarming findings\u201d by the Central Bank of Brazil, which revealed that recipients of <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/featurednews\/2024\/10\/07\/lula-bolsa-familia-bets\/\">Bolsa Fam\u00edlia<\/a>, Brazil\u2019s financial aid program for low-income families, spent BRL 3 billion ($530 million) on gambling, as tracked by the PIX payment system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President In\u00e1cio <strong>Lula da Silva<\/strong> has warned Senators and Ministers that he would intervene and shut down the Bets market if it threatens welfare programs aimed at protecting Brazil\u2019s poor and vulnerable, particularly the Bolsa Fam\u00edlia fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other matters, the Senate has extended the CPI of Integrity, led by Senator <strong>Jorge Kajuru<\/strong> (PSB-GO) as chair and Senator <strong>Rom\u00e1rio<\/strong> (PL-RJ) as rapporteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inquiry, which began in April, has now been extended until February 2025 to give Senators more time to investigate allegations and suspicions of match-fixing in Brazilian football, involving players, managers, and betting companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senators Kajuru and Rom\u00e1rio are leading the inquiry into the integrity and technical protections of Brazilian sports, following a criminal investigation into betting fraud that impacted Brazilian football in 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/sbceurasia\">Telegram channel!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate of Brazil has \u201cpartially delayed\u201d the Commission of Inquiry (CPI) investigations aimed at reviewing the laws, standards, and protections of the Bets regime.
