{"id":7401,"date":"2024-11-04T12:53:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=7401"},"modified":"2024-11-04T12:53:54","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T12:53:54","slug":"isle-of-man-gambling-regulator-denies-un-criticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/11\/04\/isle-of-man-gambling-regulator-denies-un-criticism\/","title":{"rendered":"Isle of Man Gambling Regulator Denies UN Criticism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Mark Rutherford<\/strong>, acting chief executive of the Isle of <strong>Man Gambling Supervision Commission (GSC),<\/strong> has rejected recent criticism from a <strong>United Nations <\/strong>report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report, released by the <strong>United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)<\/strong>, highlights the rapid growth of cybercrime and illegal online gambling operations in Southeast Asia. It also describes the Isle of Man gambling regulations as vulnerable to exploitation by organised crime syndicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is claimed that organised crime groups have set up Asia-focused operations in jurisdictions such as the Isle of Man, <strong>Curacao and Malta<\/strong>, which have become attractive to gambling companies due to what it calls \u201csoft regulations\u201d and the relative ease of obtaining licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford expressed disappointment over the report\u2019s claims, as reported by Isle of Man Today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GSC conducts its regulation in line with international standards and was disappointed to read in the UN report an allusion to lax regulatory controls in the Isle of Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GSC\u2019s mutual evaluation by Moneyval in 2016 gave the GSC a very high technical mark for its AML CFT framework and we do not agree with the UNODC report\u2019s conclusion that we have inadequate controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GSC has entry controls in place for businesses seeking licences and an ongoing supervision regime,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford had previously addressed the issues in evidence to the Isle of Man Parliament\u2019s Economic Policy Review Committee in October. He cited the creation of a dedicated AML CFT unit, staffed by qualified professionals, as evidence of the Commission\u2019s increased oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford\u2019s comments came after the April enforcement action against <strong>King Gaming,<\/strong> which saw the gambling operator\u2019s licence revoked following a raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutherford said at the time that he had \u201cnot seen a wider impact\u201d arising from the King Gaming affair. He insisted that such incidents were isolated. \u201cWe had about 250 licences in our time and one of them turned into this.
