{"id":7513,"date":"2024-11-13T13:43:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T13:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/?p=7513"},"modified":"2024-11-13T13:44:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T13:44:05","slug":"consultations-on-icasino-in-france-are-scheduled-for-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbceurasia.com\/en\/2024\/11\/13\/consultations-on-icasino-in-france-are-scheduled-for-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Consultations on iCasino in France Are Scheduled for 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The government\u2019s move means online casino regulation will be in 2026 at the earliest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France is set to undertake a six-month consultation to assess whether the country will regulate online casino in 2025, thus drawing a line under the question of timing and whether the vertical could be regulated this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news follows the meeting of French gambling stakeholders that was organized by Budget Minister <strong>Laurent Saint-Martin<\/strong> this week and comes in the wake of its <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcnews.co.uk\/europe\/2024\/10\/22\/france-icasino-amendments-2025\/\">amendment to legalise online casino<\/a> nearly three weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 50 delegates from the country\u2019s casino, horse racing and online gambling sectors, along with MPs and representatives from mayoral associations and player protection groups, were present at the event on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s good to talk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industry contacts have noted the government\u2019s willingness to acknowledge and discuss&nbsp; the topic, something that did not occur under the previous&nbsp; administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The online operator trade body <strong>AFJEL<\/strong> once again warned of the size of the illegal online casino market targeting the country, but its spokesperson <strong>Isabelle Djian<\/strong> also alluded to that idea when she told Les Echos she was pleased \u201ca first step had been taken\u201d and that \u201ca form of denial\u201d about the issue had come to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Casinos de France President Gr\u00e9gory Rabuel<\/strong> and CdF VP <strong>Fabrice Paire<\/strong> reiterated their calls for only French casinos to be allowed to operate online via \u2018digital mirrors\u2019 that would reflect their physical offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paire again made the point that if the market was completely open it would mirror the current online sports betting markets, where three brands control 80% of the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe would be on the starting line, but the contest would be rigged,\u201d he said, and CdF \u201cwill not make the same mistake it made in 2010\u201d when it allowed online companies that had been operating in the market to enter the regulated market with huge databases that enabled them to build unassailable market shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pour et Contre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gaming&amp;Co<\/strong> understands that while CdF received strong support from the country\u2019s mayors and local leaders, horse racing operators expressed their opposition to online casino regulation, while <strong>Fran\u00e7aise des Jeux<\/strong>, much to the surprise of those present in the wake of its acquisition of <strong>Kindred Group<\/strong>, expressed strong doubts about it, pointing to the addictive nature of the games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of potential addiction issues, those two sectors might also be worried about how online casino could impact customers\u2019 discretionary spend levels to the detriment of horse race betting or scratchcard products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFJEL said it would be willing to establish a compensation fund that would be distributed to the communes, but there are serious doubts as to the viability of such systems from both mayors and casinos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BGC\u2019s surprise attendance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK\u2019s Betting and <strong>Gaming Council (BGC)<\/strong>, accompanied by bet365 and other major operators, was also present, again much to the surprise of many of some delegates. It told the audience that online casino would not have a negative impact on the physical sector and would in fact help it grow by creating volume and awareness among players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gambling regulator <strong>ANJ<\/strong> noted that regulating the vertical would be \u201ca major reform\u201d and that it will be studying other countries\u2019 online casino regulation model to assess their economic and public health impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the government will set up three working groups, no further detail on what they will assess has been provided, to evaluate the topic as part of its six months consultation project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first three months will decide whether regulation should happen and the next three months will determine how regulation would be implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to subscribe to our <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/sbceurasia\">Telegram channel!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government\u2019s move means online casino regulation will be in 2026 at the earliest.
